GMD LONDON VIGNETTES
GMD-built SD40's: CN 5153, 5156 and 5158 were sold in 1997 to Connell Leasing (GEC Alsthom), rebuilt into the GCFX 6030 to 6079 series. Renumbered between 2003 and 2008 into the WC 6900 to 6949-series after their lease expired. CN 5153 to GCFX 6040 to WC 6910, CN 5156 to GCFX 6035 to WC 6905, and CN 5158 to GCFX 6067 (Note: did not get WC 6937 as planned).
CN SD40 5158 was shot by Mark Forseille on the transfer tracks at Fraser Mills in Coquitlam, BC back in January 1996.
The CN 5154 is in the middle of a three unit set just leaving CN's Thornton yard in Surrey, BC headed towards New Westminster over the Fraser River Bridge back in April 1997.
With CP's SD40's now down to the last seven in service, let's look at this one: CP SD40-2 5824. According to Bruce Chapman she was active until February 2016, and she's been recently stored serviceable locally in Port Coquitlam, BC. She's the lowest numbered non retired 5800 remaining on the roster at the moment too.
Here's a summary of Mark Forseille's photos. The first image was taken at Port Moody, BC by the late Ray Humphries sporting the large multimark (Conductor's side) back in March 1979.
The second photo was taken at North Bend, BC in April 1995 (also Conductor's side).
Photo three (Engineer's side) taken on the arrival track at CP's yard in Port Coquitlam, BC back in Aug 2003. This unit had a Y2K electrical panel added to it. One of a number of SD40-2 units modified and set up as backup power in case the power went out at midnight on Dec 31, 1999. Well, we all know that they did never really need the back up.
The last photo also taken at Port Coquitlam, BC (Conductor's side) in Jan 2005 sporting the new look paint scheme.
The CN 5156 and 5130 are just off the Fraser River rail bridge and headed towards Thornton Yard in Surrey, BC back in June 1987. The old wooden trestles have been replaced by concrete spans in recent years.
Where Did These CN SD40's End Up?
According the Canadian Trackside Guide:
CN 5150, 5155 and 5157 were sold in 1998 and rebuilt as KCS SD40-3 6600 to 6639 series. KCS 6621 to 6639 were leased back, and renumbered into GTW 5938 to 5956 series. CN 5150 to KCS 6627 to GTW 5944, CN 5155 to KCS 6614 to KCS 3149 to DMVW 3149, and CN 5157 to KCS 6609, to KCS 3148, to BPRR 3344. CN 5151 was wrecked near McMurphy, BC on Sep 29th, 1974 and scrapped. CN 5154 was scrapped at Mandak Metals. CN 5152 became HLCX 6092.
CP SD40-2 5584 and TH&P GP7 sit in the sunshine at the GMD plant in London Ontario for a special event.
A locomotive that we continue to get many CRO reader inquiries about is CSXT F40-PH-2 9993 (Former AMTK F40-PHR 395), which arrived in Montreal at CP St-Luc Yard on March 12th, 2016. Richard Marchi shot her the following day sitting on one of the Diesel Shop tracks. A few days later she was dropped off on the CADRAIL Shop spur. Our source at CSX confirmed CSX 9993 will get a complete rebuild, but at this time could not elaborate further on the entire scope of work to be done.
CSXT 9993 was not built as an "F40PH-2". She is from Amtrak's EMD F40PHR locomotive model Order #847048 that were numbered in the AMTK 391-400 series. CSX 9993 was built in August 1985 as AMTRAK F40PHR 395.
