Very far from home on August 24th, Steve Koop Angelicola shot Illinois Central SD70 1015, leading the Montreal to Saint Albans, VT train. CN train 324 is shown passing MP 7 just north of the St Albans Vermont NECR Italy Yard. The EMD had come all the way from Chicago (Markham Yard), just three days earlier!

A former BC RAIL Bluebird, freshly painted BCOL C44-9W 4647 was shot sitting outside the Woodcrest Shop by Mike Garza.

Repaying Horse Power Hours to CSX, Sam Sponseller photographed CN C44-9W 2625 trailing on an EB CSX oil train at Willard, Ohio in late-August

On August 23rd at the Transcona Shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba,  Ian Campbell clicked very rare CN SD38-2 1650.  Note the odd looking road number repaired in yellow tape! She was built in December 1975 for the Northern Alberta Railways as NAR 401, (CN class GF-620a), and was previously CN 5700, before wearing her current CN 1650 number. It is one of only three Canadian-built SD38-2's, on the entire CN roster.

Our CRO SEPTEMBER 2016 cover was taken by Bruce Schwierske, and shows Canadian National ES44AC (CN 2801) leading train 769, a westbound coal train as it passed another westbound freight in the hole at Salvus, British Columbia on CN's Skeena Sub on May 16th, 2013.

CN train 529 (CP 931, NS 31T) had a great surprise on August 8th as Nicholas Houde shot the Norfolk Southern Fire Responders SD60E leading two NS siblings  passing through Montreal (in Saint-Henri on the CN Montreal Sub).  This marks the first time this Norfolk Southern one-of-a-kind paint scheme has been in Canada.

Francois Jolin shot CN #529 passing the old Grand Trunk station at St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC on August 14th led by NS 8168 and NS 8445 elephant style.

As I know we have slide fans, here are some nice looking BLE, IC, EJE roster shots that were posted for sale on eBay, in August:  Bessemer & Lake Erie SD40T-2 (BLE 908) repainted into CN livery lettered BLE sitting by the IC Coal Tower at Centralia, IL on April 4th, 2016.

Illinois Central SD70 1031 at Centralia, IL repainted into CN livery lettered IC.

Elgin Joliet and Eastern SD38-2 666 is shown sitting outside the CN Woodcrest Shop, in the summer of 2016.

On August 17th, Michael Berry shot CN 149 crossing over the eastern end of the Lachine Canal with IC 1001, IC 2705 and  CN 2294, as it departs the Port of Montreal, QC.

LATEST GE ORDERS

This was the Toronto Shop employee's first look at the CN 3100-series! Factory fresh from GE in Ft. Worth, Texas, CN ET44AC's 3100 and 3109 had just arrived at MacMillan Yard in Mid-August. Here they are at the Diesel facility to get set up for their first trip!

On the CN Springhill Sub August 23rd, Matt Landry caught brand new CN ET44AC 3100 leading CN Q120, as they approach Debert, Nova Scotia.  It still had that new paint smell as it passed East Mines, NS!

As of August 27th the plant in Fort Worth Texas had completed and delivered ET44AC units up to CN 3117.  Matt Liptak shot brand new CN ET44AC's with UP ET44AH 2674 at the GE plant in Texas prior to their release.

The CN 3000-sereies ET44AC's from Texas are all in service, with many in Canada.  Here, westbound CN ET44AC 3075 leads a pair of weary old GP38-2's at Geddes Street in Belleville, Ontario at 14:25 hrs on August 20th. (Barry Silverthorn Photo)

Last month, GE Manufacturing Solutions marked a milestone by celebrating the 1,000th locomotive built at the Fort Worth plant only three-and-a-half years after opening. The 1,000th locomotive is an Evolution Series Tier 4 ET44AC locomotive model for Canadian National Railway (CN 3087). The locomotive is part of an order of 90 locomotives by Canadian National. Since opening in late 2012, the plant has built locomotives for BNSF Railway, Canadian National, CSX Transportation, among other railroads. BNSF has had more than 770 locomotives built at the facility alone.  The plant employs about 700 people.

The CN GE Tier 4 deliveries began in early April 2016 and should  be completed by the end of next month.  Canadian National ordered 90 locomotives from GE: 82 ET44AC, and 8 ES44AC T4C (Tier 4 Credit) units. The 82 ET44AC are 3039-3120; and the ES44AC Tier 4 locos will be numbered CN 2976-2983.

These 82 ET44AC locomotives offer better clearance up top and have the new tapered roof line as well as inward facing Cameras 0n the more recent ones. The other 8 units on order are ES44AC Tier 4 Tax Credit units.  CN 2976-2983 and they will be built in Fort Worth, TX or Erie, PA.

STORED UNITS SEPT 2016

Due to the grain train season which began on August 1st, CN has returned some of their stored EMD locomotives back into service. At the CN Centralia Shop Trey Holland's Drone took this image in late-July 2016

The following locomotives are stored in Montreal Taschereau Yard.  They Include SD60, SD60F, GP38-2 and a Yard Slug.

 On July 15th, Ron Visockis clicked C40-8W CN 2199 (ex-BNSF 864, nee-ATSF 864) at Belleville, ON.

IC Former LMSX C40-8W STATUS:

To date, IC C40-8W 2458, 2461, and 2465 remain the only IC/ex-LMS blue bird units painted in CN uniform.  IC 2458 and 2461 were painted at the Centralia Shop in Illinois and IC 2465 was done at the Transcona Shop, in Winnipeg.

The other LMSX C40-8W's are still wearing (Conrail) blue paint, and are patched IC. After operating on CN and Conrail for many years in a co-leasing arrangement in the 1990's, LMSX 728-736, 738, and 739) eventually had their leases purchased by CN. One is off the roster. IC 2464 was retired in 2012, after being wrecked on the CSX.

In mid-August Mark Tracy shot one of the Bluebirds (IC 2466) parked outside the Woodcrest shop.

Oakway SD60 9041 was wrecked during the 1980's while on lease to BN.  The locomotive was replaced with (Electro Motive Diesel Division) SD60 Demonstrator EMDX #3.

Oakway SD60 9062 was wrecked and scrapped in the 1990's.

SOLD or RETIRED

Last CN Retirements to date:

Two GMD-built units: CN GMD1u 1410 and CN GP9RM 7228

Were sold to (NPRR) Northern Plains Railway, CN 7228 was retired in 2013 and CN 1410 was removed from the CN roster in 2016.

CN GP9-Slug 249 and CN HBU-4 522 were Retired between March 12, and August 12, 2015.

CN GP9-Slug 211, and WC SW1500 1552 and 1560 were Retired in 2013 and 2012 respectively, and were "Un-Retired" sometime between March 12 and August 12, 2015).

For those keeping notes: Retired CN GP9-Slug 207 and 227 were both "Un-Retired" between Aug 12, and Dec 31, 2015.

CN C40-8W 2191 "Retired" in October 2014 with wreck damage following the WSOR collision in Wisconsin, became "Unretired" in 2015 and was fully repaired and repainted at NRE Silvis, IL.  She returned to service in January 2016). CN 2191 was reinstated into the active roster sometime between the March 12 and August 12, 2015 CRO Retirement reports.  Unfortunately for us, CN reports their retirements very infrequently.

IC E9Au 100 and 101 (Retired in 2014, were sold to the Iowa Pacific in October 2014).  In November 2014, Martin Simane Shot Illinois Central E9A's 100 and 101 inside the Shop at Markham Yard.  Seeing the elephant style reminded him to all the years that the CB&Q ran them that way. He knew that would be the last time he might see the pair again, standing on the pit they called home for the last 20 years.  They of course are now repainted and on the Iowa Pacific Railway, and in good hands.

Donald Haskel photographed Grand Trunk GP9 4902 with a CN baggage and two coaches at the station near Attleboro, ME in the 1960's.  Not while this units was lettered for Grand Trunk, soon after this picture CN lettered motive power dominated and the Portland, ME to Montreal, QC passenger service was ended.

For the BIG M fans: Bob Heathorn shot CN M636 2328 and 2313 looking beefy and beautiful in great looking paint in Ottawa, ON back in 1983. (Photo is mislabeled).
