Mark Mautner got a nice surprise when he caught Union Pacific's SP heritage SD70ACe #1996 leading NS train #224 ( Atlanta to Kansas City intermodal ) thru the St Louis area. Both shots are taken on NS St Louis district on the Illinois side of the river.

The Vermillion Valley Railroad is owned by the Indiana Boxcar Corporation and operates over a portion of the former Peoria & Eastern Railroad.  Fittingly, they even use a Peoria & Eastern caboose on every mainline run. The shortline has only one very sporadic online customer, and survives mainly on car storage. On March 11th  they operated on only there second revenue run of 2013, making their train moves an elusive catch.  These two views show their handsomely painted ex-BN GP9 1726, and  a Peoria & Eastern caboose, making the six-mile run to CSX at Danville, IL to retrieve new cars for storage.  These guys are some first rate shortline railroaders and another visit will be in order hopefully on a sunny day.

After working 6 hours helping our mechanical guy work on our companies SW1200 and pulling a 11 hour all nighter March 11th on a BNSF 111 car corn shuttle. Mark Mautner found the energy to go out and bag his  16th heritage unit in action at one locale. NS/CNJ heritage SD70ACe 1071 is shown leading BNSF loaded Bakken oil train UMNUMIJ4-09A onto Alton & Southern property. Train is passing one of three interlocking towers left standing in St Louis area UP's Lennox tower. Mitchell, IL March 12th 2013.

Hem Leasing GP38-3 # 1074 built as DRGW GP40 # 3043. One of sixty GP38 types Helm is cycling thru Metro East Industries for overhaul and paint.

Copper Basin Railway GP40-3 # 302 a one unit order for this company. Built as L&N GP40 # 3012 , later to Idaho Northern & Pacific and MVPX # 4506. Posed for rosters at MEI as it should have shipped out last night.

D&H ALCO VIGNETTE

My friend Warren Calloway photographed Delaware and Hudson Alco PA #17 with the "Adirondack" a day train to Albany and New York City about to depart  Montreal (CP) Windsor Station in 1976.  The four PA's had just returned from modification at Morrison/Knudsen and with paint touch ups at the D&H Colonie Shop The quartet looked spectacular!.  As these were now day trains, D&H leased four Dome cars two from CP, and two from Amtrak. for snack service and to admire the D&H's scenic route on the west side of Lake Champlain.

Braving the cold temperatures, L. Sulengarten shot the same train at almost the exact sane spot at Windsor Station during the Winter of 1976.   Note D&H  doubled up the PA’s to more steam to heat the passenger cars during the cold months and leased four Erie-Lackawanna E8’s as supplement power.
