In November, CP activated stored SD9043MAC 9108, 9134, 9142 and 9157, at the Winnipeg Diesel Shop, with others being prepared for return to service as we went to press. For the time being, these are restricted to Winnipeg-Thunder Bay service only.
Also back from the dead are several SOO SD60’s! Previously stored SOO SD60 6033, 6035, and 6037 were activated in mid-November and have returned to service as trailing units only. CP intends to activate any stored SOO SD60’s that are potentially serviceable, and of course will return their remaining fleet of stored CP SD60’s, back to active duty. On November 16th, Kenneth Borg caught one of these activated units, SOO 6033 on CP 243 setting out a customs hold car at NS Oakwood Yard.
Kenneth also bagged S00 6035 ate the same spot as CP 241 is about to make lift a customs hold at NS Oakwood Yard November 20th.
Last month, 30 CP ES44AC, and 28 AC4400CW units were leased to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. All these units are lead compatible. In November the amount was raised to 82 units, with almost a 50% split between ES44AC and AC4400CW locomotives. We will have these new numbers by the next issue.
The confirmed 61 GE’s on lease to BNSF (as of November 14th, 2013) are:
Leased CP ES44AC 8879 has NS SD70M-2 2669 and C40-9W 9860 leading BNSF train H-NTWMEM back after a crew change at Chaffee, MO on November 2nd. In the background H3 painted BNSF GP28M 1536 is at rest for the weekend. BNSF 1536 began life as Northern Pacific GP9 #279 in July 1956. Christopher Bodkin photo.
While staying at the famous Izaak Walton Inn on the south edge of Glacier National Park in Montana, Jason Arnot a Calgary naïve was surprised to catch CP power, as he only just learned there were Canadian Pacific GEs leased to BNSF. CP 8796 was switching an eastbound train at Shelby on Saturday November 9th. At the west end of town, BNSF 893 and equally-ratty looking CP 9567 were on the point of a westbound windmill train. They both look pretty bad but the CP is 18 years old and the former Santa Fe is about 20! On November 10th, they woke up and it was snowing, and by the time it stopped that night almost a metre had fallen! . One of the BNSF trains they saw was a westbound grain train with CP 9533 on the front with a BNSF engine; rear DPUs were CP 9570 and 9503. The original crew ran out of hours so the train was stopped for about a half hour or so waiting for a new crew to continue to Whitefish. You can see that it is really snowing, but 9503 looked pretty sharp (and just a little Christmas-y) in fresh red paint. The last picture shows an eastbound freight heading up the hill in the blizzard…you can hardly tell but the middle unit is a CP AC4400CW.
Another AC4400CW on BNSF is CPRS 9530, seen here leading a grain tain around the curve through East Grand Forks,MN on November 15th. (Carl Becker photo)

CANDIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY HOLIDAY TRAIN ON FACEBOOK:
https://www.facebook.com/HolidayTrain
The southbound deadhead move of Canadian Pacifics’ Holiday Train ran overnight and Gary Knapp had planned to shoot it coming off of Rogers Island in Fort Edward, NY. Greg Klingler had pointed the location out to him earlier and in spite of the spots shortcomings, it offered a grand view of the train on the open deck bridge crossing the Hudson.
The shortcomings? He would have had to stand on a narrow highway bridge with the light stands holding the flash units taped to the bridge railing. He had looked the location over during an earlier visit and deemed it doa-ble. A car swings around the blind corner and under the bridge behind me, to park off to my right. The driver gets out and I recognize the voice saying “Hi Gary”. Greg Klingler walks up to greet me. They talk for a while over night photography and the Holiday Train, then it dawns on him, Greg might be a good addition to the photo here.
He agrees to try it and stands next to the tree on the right, first too close to the camera, too dominating in the composition, then he takes a couple steps toward the river and wow, what a difference it makes! Remembering what to do from when he posed on the platform up at Riverside for me several weeks back, Greg marks his spot and walks back to check the photo in the camera. Some twenty minutes later he hears the car scanner picking up the crew of 9824, the Holiday Train locomotive, talking to the North End Dispatcher...........clearly, like they are nearby. He sends Greg to his position on the river bank and we wait as I remind him in years past here, the only warning one gets is when they blow for the crossing above us at the station.
Which provides maybe thirty seconds warning before the head end is on the bridge when traveling at passenger train speed! Hence my hovering around the camera. After several long minutes, we finally hear 9824s air horn, but it’s not the intense sound associated with high speed running, it sounds like the train is creeping along! Then nothing happens. The headlight glow I could see above the bridge disappears! A minute, then two passes by and we joke uneasily that the crew is doing this just to add to the drama for us! lol! Now the headlights are back on, and we can hear the 9824 starting to pull.
Entering onto the bridge at around twenty mph, Greg waves and I watch as the pilot plow progresses slowly across to where a silent press of the shutter release sets off the lighting, capturing the scene! Viewing the resulting photos afterwards, it is apparent how much of an improvement Greg provides! Shot on November 26, 2013 at 04:32 in Fort Edward, NY. Very special thanks to Greg Klingler for his contribution to the photo!
All The best in 2014;

In November, CP activated stored SD9043MAC 9108, 9134, 9142 and 9157, with others being prepared for return to service as we went to press. For the time being, these are restricted to Winnipeg-Thunder Bay service. CP’s fleet of SD9043MACs (CP 9100-9128, 9130-9132, 9134-9137 and 9139- 9160) have been stored outside in Winnipeg for a few years, and it will be a challenge for the Winnipeg Diesel Shop mechanics to activate them! They remain for sale of course, even though the latest CP Surplus Sale ended November 4th.
The following rebuilt CP and SOO SD60/SD60M units are for sale or lease:
CP GP38-2 overhaul update:
The overhaul of GP38-2 and GP38AC locomotives to Tier 0+ compliance, upgrading with AESS (Automatic Engine Start/Stop), and repainting them into CP livery had been spread over three facilities: EMD-Progress Rail, National Railway Equipment, and CAD Railway Industries. Currently CP is only utilizing NRE and CADRAIL to complete the SOO, D&H, and CP GP38-2,and CP GP38AC fleets.
GP38-2's released from EMD-Progress Rail (Mayfield, KY):
CP 3024, 3025, 3038, 3040, 3041, 3042, 3048, 3057, 3061, 3062, 3066, 3111, 3117,3126, 3127, 3128, 3129, 3133, and (former SOO) CP 4414, 4415, 4418, 4424, 4427, 4428, 4436, 4446, 4447, 4450, 4506, 4513, 4514, and 4515 completing the contract. No more CP GP38-2's have been scheduled for overhaul at EMD-Progress Rail in Mayfield, KY:
GP38-2’s / GP38AC’s released from NRE (Silvis, IL):
CP 3001, 3007, 3013, 3017, 3023, 3033, 3050, 3075, *3084 (*Script), 3103, 3124, 3134,
CP (ex-SOO) 4426, 4439, and 4449
CP (ex-STL&H, exx-D&H, nee-LV) GP38-2 7308, and (ex-D&H nee-LV) 7312.
CP GP38AC 3007 is the first GP38AC to be completed and released. It is interesting to note that the locomotive designation “GP38AC” remains below the cab road numbers on overhauled CP 3001. CP 3000-3020 are straight GP38AC's and do not have any of the Dash 2 electronics. The major difference between the two is the performance control electronics where the 38AC has to be set manually, and the Dash-2 is set by modual- cards. NRE will not be not be altering their original GP38AC classification.
CP GP38AC 3013 was snagged by Dennis Weber leading the TEC train at LaCrescent, MN on November 15th..
K. J. Larson photographed (with NRE permission), CP GP38AC 3017 fresh from the shop on November 4th.
CP GP38AC 3013 is shown ready for pick-up off the IAIS November 7th.
Sadly, D&H 7312 is now officially CP 7312. It was pulled from the paint booth November 15th by K.J. Larson as he arrived at work. As you can see the number boards have to be installed. It still had the fresh paint smell!
Prior to her CP Canady Apple Red "dip job" D&H 7312 looked like this..... Shot at NRE in October by K.J. Larson.
GP38AC’s and GP38-2’s for overhaul at NRE (Silvis, IL):
Currently at the NRE-SILVIS SHOP:
CP GP38AC 3005, 3010, 3013, 3017, 3020
GP GP38-2 3074, 3096
D&H GP38-2 7307, 7309, 7312
SOO GP38-2 4401 and 4441.
SOO 4401 arrived at NRE –Silvis on November 4th where K.J. Larson clicked off this shot of her.
NRE SHOP RECAP:
CP 3013 was set out on the IAIS lead and was officially released on November 7th. CP 3020 is also complete, and ready for testing and is next to be released. CP 7307 came out of the paint shop on November 7th, 1/07/13 and is being readied for testing.

On November 4th, Francois Jolin photographed Southbound CP #642 hugging the rugged shoreline of Lake Champlain bound for Albany, NY. This location Willsboro Bay (also knows as Red Rocks), was made famous through the many fine Delaware & Hudson photos taken by Jim O’Shaghnessy in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The power on this day, CP SD60 6252,ICE SD40-2 6412 and 6429.
On November 2nd, Dennis Weber caught Iowa Chicago and Eastern (ICE) Train 475, with CP SD60M 6258, CP SD60 6250, CP ES44AC 8828 and CP F9B 1900 at La Crescent, MN. CP 1900 had just been released from NRE Silvis last week following replacement of her air compressor.
CP SD30C-ECO update
18 units (CP 5000-5017) of the SD30C-ECO order have been delivered from Progress Rail in Mayfield, KY with the last two expected in December.
Rebuilt from SD40-2 cores and frames at the EMD-Progress Rail Shop in Mayfield, KY., the 20 units are powered by a new 12 cylinder 3000 hp 12-710G3F engine. The SD30C-ECO locomotives meet Tier 0+US emissions standards and are currently assigned to St. Paul. MN. As their production was behind schedule and delivery was delayed, EMD compensated CP.
Further information about ECO re-powering can be found here:

CP GP20C-ECO update
In a welcomed surprise to railfans and employees alike, a group of GP20C-ECO units from the second order are being assigned to Canada; Four CP 2200’s arrived at Toronto Agincourt Yard on November 5th: (CP 2251, 2257, 2255, 2253), However we have learned that Toronto Yard is to eventually receive 20 units of the current 40 locomotive order (CP 2250-2269). Three others will be assigned at Welland, ON. Currently 2230-2249 are assigned to Alyth Yard, and 2250-2269 are assigned to Agincourt Yard. A total of 150 GP20C-ECO locomotives will be constructed for CP. The first 30 are to be assigned to the diesel shop in Coquitlam, BC, with the next 20 assigned to Alyth Shop in Calgary, AB and the other 20 are assigned to MacMillan Yard, Toronto.
Retired CP GP9u 1548, 1578 and approximately 15 others will be dismantled by J&L Consulting in Pickering, ON as part of the CP’s GP20C-ECO rebuild program. As these 17 geeps are not road worthy for long distance, this will save CP the extra repairs needed to make them road worthy in order to travel all the way out west. Any other stored Geeps that are road worthy, are to be marshaled, and prepared for transit to Coquitlam, BC. At the SRY shop, J&L Consulting has been contracted to drain their fluids before being delivered to the dismantling spur at ABC Metals Surrey Yard. The only salvaged parts are the complete truck assemblies with combos. J&L have built special rail systems for loading these truck parts onto flatcars. This flatcar pool of six cars, cycle back and forth between BC, and PRS in East Chicago.z
In early November CP received 2237, 2239-2248, and these are now in Calgary, assigned to Alyth Yard, The second GP20C-ECO order is expected to be completed by year end,
CP’s second order (#20127752), for 40 more GP20C-ECO units numbered CP 2230-2269 have begun to be delivered. All units from the first order of 30 GP20C-ECO units (CP 2200-2229) have been delivered from EMD’s Muncie, IN plant and are in service are assigned to St-Paul, MN, except for a half dozen roaming in Canada. On October 12th, brand new GP20C-ECO units 2240, 2242, 2243, and 2244 from the second order arrived at Alyth Yard, in Calgary, Alberta. In November more units from the second order arrived in Canada.
The following GP7u/GP9u locos have already been scrapped at ABC Metals with their parts incorporated into the GP20C-ECO program.
CP 1501, 1503, 1505, 1515, 1519, 1525, 1528, 1565, 1566, 1567, 1568, 1569, 1570, 1581, 1587, 1588,1603, 1609, 1611, 1617, 1621, 1638, 1644, 1647, 1649, 1682,1687, 1692, 1696, 1697, 8224, 8229, 8240, 8242,and 8264.
Non-Montreal assigned CP GP9u’s CP 1545, 1564, 1651, and 8244 are stored with stacks capped at St-Luc. Montreal assigned CP 8241, 8219, 8247, 8228. 1690 (ex-TH&B), and 1688 (ex-TH&B), are also still stored at St-Luc Yard. CP 1608 had been stored at St-Luc, but in October was donated by CP to Exporail.
Retired ICE GP9 103, and unserviceable ICE GP9’s 105 and 114, (all ex-SOO), will not be coming to the SRY Shop in New Westminster, BC for stripping as first thought, Apparently they are not roadworthy, and will be stripped, and scrapped locally in Nehant, Iowa, where they are currently stored.

In the early morning hours of May 5, 2007 Gary Knap shot this portrait at Lacolle, Quebec on Canadian Pacific’s Canadian Main. In the days of the Delaware & Hudson this trackage running across the U.S./Canada border between Rouses Point, NY and Delson, Quebec near Montreal was operated as D&H subsidiary Napierville Junction, known simply as “the NJ”. Having been tipped of by Walt Favro of the NJ roadswitchers rare appearance operating at night this week due to trackwork on the Lacolle Sub being performed during the day, and reading of the jobs power, a pair of GP 38-2s, Gary had traveled up here the night before and made arrangements with the crew to pose them for a crew portrait if time permitted sometime during the week.
What better location for a backdrop than here at “The Castle” a nickname acquired by the towns ex-D&H passenger station/yard office and Customs House! The short CP train of covered hoppers passess by, and the brakeman is on the ground throwing the switch into the siding as the train slows to a stop, then I enjoy the sound of 567 prime movers working a bit backing the loads past me down the siding. 3025/s cab comes by him. The session is on! The pair of GP 38-2s cuts away from the cement loads and comes up past me on the siding and I was ecstatic, this was really going to happen! Back on the main, here comes the locomotives back towar Gary and he stands where he wants the cab of 3025 to be positioned, the engineer leans out to ask, “is this good here?” Gary asks him to go back more, then hollers up..........Perfect! The crew emerges from the cab and once on the ground quick introductions are made, copies are promised (of course) of the resulting night photo, then he walk with them over to where I wanted them to stand for him.
Posing the crew here he realized his concern with “keeping it simple” a paradox in night photography, so he only needed to be concerned with lighting up the three men..........what could go wrong? Ha,ha,ha! With the lighting for “The Castle” and the locomotives set up already I only felt the need to move a flash or two on one side of the crew then I arrived atop the stepladder with the wonderful scene attached looking back at me, only much darker! Then he tried the lighting.................whoa! The photo looked excellent, the flash units were angled enough so the mens reflective safety vests were not overpowering, a concern I had beforehand.......and, the shadows created by the lights on the crew actually made a sort of frame within a frame. The locomotives..........The Castle...........He remembers adjusting the manual focus for a couple test shots, then we did five or six shots and I was confident I had it. Down off the stepladder, Gary shared the images on the lcd monitor with the crew who were surprised at how good they looked! lol! I scrambled to get paper and pen from the car to gather emails from everyone, then we shook hands as hesincerely thanked each of them for making the night photo a success, said their goodbyes and they boarded 3025 and departed light power for home terminal in Rouses Point.
If I remember correctly, as this was more than six and a half years ago, within three or four days the NJ Roadswitcher crew were back on their normal day schedule! Shot in Lacolle, Quebec on May 5, 2007 at 02:59 with the 5D and Zeiss ZF 35/2 lens.
CP crews will begin running through to Buffalo, NY in December 2013. Toronto-Buffalo will handle traffic from the SOO at Lambton Yard with crews changed there and then running direct to CSX (ex-CR) Frontier Yard in Buffalo. London crews will work from Quebec Street via the Junction to NS yard in Buffalo. Crews will be limited to work a maximum of ten hours. The major track realignment in Lambton and West Toronto will enable these lifts. Additionally, #142-143 will be going via CSX Buffalo-Chicago beginning December 3rd. This frees up slots on the NS, and also allows tall stacks that do not fit through the tunnel at Windsor. The tunnel at Hamilton only good for 2 marine stacks ...the same as Windsor... Domestic double-stacks should be fine, since the height (20'-2") is the same as the Auto-Max cars that travel through the Hamilton tunnel daily. (Ray Kennedy and Don McQueen).
Another Windmill Tower train ran over the CP Winchester Sub at Chesterville, ON November 24th with a pair of SD60’s (CP 6225 and 6245) was shot headi8ng to Smiths Falls, ON by Francois Jolin.

Neil Compton clicked brand new CP C-630 4503 sits on the test track at Montreal Locomotive Works, in 1968 in Montreal east.
Six months after delivery, Neil bagged the class unit C-630 4500 sitting at the rear of the St Luc Diesel Shop (my old stomping ground-Ed).
On what was likely first trip west, CP C630M's 4501, 4502 and 4503 get a look over from the crew. Roy Jennings was there to catch the action - (Deame Motis photo Collection with thanks).
Neil Compton snapped this fascinating shot of brand new MLW CP RAIL M636 4550 at Hochelaga Yard. MLW incorrectly placed the Multimark forward of the lomg hood screening. The Multimark was soon after moved correctly to the end of the long hood. It is very rare to see a shot this early version.
Inbound D&H U23B 2308 is passing North Junction and in minutes will be arriving at St-Luc Yard via Hampstead. This photo was taken from the old Westminster overpass by Frank Lenny Smith.
OUR CRO DECEMBER COVER: Gary Knapp capped off a memorable night at Westport, NY with this classic Christmas scene (Our CRO cover shot). Only three hours behind the Holiday Train on November 30th, 2008, was D&H Work train with D&H GP38-2 7304!
