Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD)

After placing 44 new SD70ACe locomotives into service earlier in 2011, Ferrocarril Mexicano, S.A. de C.V. (Ferromex) took delivery of an additional 38 units from Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) last month. "Ferromex achieved record volumes in 2010 and 2011 and is planning future growth in its port cargo and inland transit operations over the next several years. The railroad selected EMD to supply its new locomotives based on the demonstrated performance and leading fuel efficiency of the SD70ACe." "The 44 SD70Ace locomotives received early last year have achieved very high and consistent performance, and fuel efficiency, as expected. The new additions will be key to our plans for 2012 and beyond, where Ferromex will continue to grow at higher levels than the average of the railroad industry " said Rogelio Vélez, CEO of Ferromex.

EMD introduced the 4,300 traction horsepower SD70ACe locomotive in 2005 for freight applications in North America and worldwide. It meets EPA Tier 2 emissions standards, enabling Ferromex to interchange locomotives with railways in the United States and Canada. The Ferromex locomotive will also feature radial trucks, distributed power and the EMD Q-cab for increased operator comfort and safety.

Electro-Motive Diesel delivered three SD70ACe demonstrator locomotives to the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad (A&M) in September, representing the first AC traction locomotives for the independent, Class III railroad. A&M operates 139 miles from Fort Smith, Ark., to Monett, Mo., and interchanges with BNSF, Union Pacific and Kansas City Southern Class I railroads. The SD70ACe locomotives are certified for EPA Tier 3 emissions standards, and features include radial trucks and distributed power, in addition to AC traction. The railroad selected EMD to supply its new locomotives based on the demonstrated performance of the SD70ACe. "To take advantage of AC traction on our mountainous route, we determined the rugged design of the SD70ACe would allow A&M to maintain high fleet availability at low cost. The SD70ACe locomotive is ideal for our operations and will enable A&M to retire several older locomotives, while drastically increasing our hauling capability and efficiency." said A&M’s Chairman Reilly McCarren. " We’re excited to provide the first AC locomotives to be introduced into A&M’s fleet," said Billy Ainsworth, Progress Rail and EMD Chief Executive Officer. "We appreciate the confidence A&M has in EMD and look forward to providing the highest quality locomotives and services to support their operations and the lowest total cost of ownership." The locomotives, EMD road numbers 1201-1203, were delivered to A&M from Progress Rail’s Mayfield, Ky., facility. EMD 1201 made its debut at the MINExpo Show in Las Vegas, Nev., last September, painted in Caterpillar® yellow. Modifications at the Mayfield shop included a new, modern paint design reflecting A&M’s corporate colors and renumbering to A&M road numbers 70-72.

Etihad Rail - the master developer and operator of the UAE’ s national railway network - has selected Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD), one of the world’s largest builders of diesel-electric locomotives, to design and manufacture seven heavy haul freight locomotives for delivery by 2012. A momentous milestone for the AED 40 billion project, the locomotives contract award is perfectly timed to support Etihad Rail’s inaugural service in the Abu Dhabi Emirate’s Western Region and reflects the requirement that the UAE-wide project will have the first trains running on schedule in 2013.

EMD is partnering with the Indian Railways to design and manufacture the WDG5 locomotive, which provides the highest horsepower on existing rail tracks and will lead to enhanced revenues. Complimenting the Indian Railways on its decision to design and manufacture the WDG5 locomotive, Billy Ainsworth, EMD president and chief executive officer and IREE 2013 keynote speaker, said, "This technological development by the RDSO and DLW, to which EMD provided design support, is a milestone achievement. EMD is proud of our 54-year association with the Indian Railways and the emerging technologies our company brings to meet global standards." The WDG5 locomotive has the capability to integrate EMD’s IntellitrainTM remote diagnostic and monitoring systems to reduce maintenance costs, enhance safety, and increase asset utilization, reliability and availability. It also has the scope to develop dual cab locomotives on an economical length frame. EMD supports the Indian Railways goal to meet emission norms as they are introduced—the WDG5 locomotive presents electronic fuel Injection technology, split cooling and suitably sized radiators, and EMD is working to introduce radial bogies, which reduce wear and tear on wheels and rails. New technological developments in safety are crucial for railroads across the world, and EMD meets these challenges by designing crashworthy cabs and structures and cab insulation techniques. Enhancing safety, salient features of the WDG5 locomotive include crashworthiness and driver comfort through the AC cab and toilet. "Other developments such as Hot Wheel and Hot Box detection systems, new signaling systems and the increased use of Rail Flash-Butt welding should be considered by the Indian Railways for enhancing safety on the tracks," added Ainsworth. Highlighting major developments in the area of green technologies, EMD will soon introduce liquefied natural gas (LNG) retrofit kits featuring its Dynamic Gas Blending (DGB) dual-fuel technology. These kits will allow EMD customers to utilize natural gas while maintaining leading performance and reliability. "We believe our dual-fuel technology will be very suitable for India since this enables engines to work on LNG or diesel fuel," stated Ainsworth. DGB demonstrator locomotives will begin operating in North America later in 2013.

EMD LONDON VIGNETTES:

Midland Railway of Manitoba (A subsidiary of Great Northern) MRM GP9 no. 2 was a handsome passenger locomotive. The loco was ordered with passenger features in case it was needed as backup for the Great Northern passenger train. The locomotive was assigned to freight service (Train 415/1416) between Winnipeg and Emerson, MB (64 miles). she was repainted BNSF at the St-Paul shop as number 1685.

The former Midland Railway geep is now preserved on the Prairie Dog Central after BNSF donated GP9 1685 about two years ago.

SOO SD60 overhaul update:

CAD Railway Industries (Lachine, QC), are contracted to do warranty repairs on all the completed CP units. CP 6251 and 6226 were the last CP SD60’s rebuilt, and released by CAD The overhauls included Tier 0+ compliance, installation of AESS (Locomotive Automatic Engine Start/Stop) to conserve fuel, and CP repaint and renumbering into the CP 6200-series. None received any cab upgrades. The rebuilt units also each received (PTC) Positive Train Control modifications at the CP St-Luc Diesel Shop.

The work trains are done for this season. (Photos by Ken Reiss)

In August, DESX GP10 8308 (ex-IC nee-Mid South Rail) was leased to the Great Sandhills Railway for service. DESX also leased LTEX GP15-1 1450 from Larry’s Truck Electric, and then in August sub-leased it out to Richardson International, an industry in Saskatchewan. Units stored on DESX property include: (DESX) SD40-2W 5308, 5310, 5311, 5312, 5313, and SD40-2 5391.
