“The Call of Trains - Railroad Photography by Jim Shaughnessy”
Jim Shaughnessy’s “The Call of Trains - Railroad Photography by Jim Shaughnessy” is a peerless and essential book by one of the most talented and influential rail photographers of all time. The time period covered is primarily the steam to diesel transition decade, the 1950s. While there are shots from the Western U.S. (including some spectacular Rio Grande and Union Pacific shots) most of the shots are from the Northeastern U.S. and Eastern Canada. The opening text by Jeff Brouws goes into a lot of depth about Shaughnessy’s photograph influences and his many photographic road trips. It also discusses Shaughnessy’s fondness for Quebec’s Eastern Townships region and some of the best photos in the book are of CP trains in that region, many with doubleheaded steam power. There are also photos from the Montreal area and from Southern Ontario. What makes Shaughnessy’s photos so great is that they are not standard 3/4 wedge shots, but often include railroaders, unique angles etc. Shaughnessy shot primarily in black and white and all the photos in the book are black and white. This book is essential for any serious railroad photographer.
