“FOLLOW THE FLAG” The very first Norfolk Southern heritage painted unit to enter Montreal, QC was NS SD70ACe 1070 in Wabash paint. She came in leading CN 529 and entered Canada after coming North over the D&H as Train 931 to Rousses Point, NY, She later departed that evening on CN 528. These trains run through to Harrisburg, PA.
WABASH (NS) 1070 is also the very first member of the NS Heritage Fleet to appear on the CP (D&H) North End, passing through on train 931 north. North End Dispatcher (Sandy) informed Gary Knapp there was a loaded crude oil unit train, (608) going through the customs inspection further north at Rouses Point, NY. . Sandy radioed the crew on 931, directing them to pull into the siding at Bluff Point, located south of the station in Plattsburgh, NY to meet 608, explaining they were going through customs at the time. Hearing this news on his scanner, he drove through Plattsburgh down to the lake front where the ex-D&H station is located, to find a small group of railfans already waiting to see the NS Heritage unit on 931. They are all members of my mailing list, and holler greetings to me as I set up the lights well away from their location. Some of these folks have not seen me since before my heart valve replacement operation! We stay apart until after 931 goes past, as some of them are videoing the train from just below where I set up the stepladder opposite the station. I know the lighting setup here well by now, as this is a favorite spot for me at night, and no areas of concern attract my attention when I test the lights. Once 608 got past us, with veteran D&H engineer Marty Shapiro at the throttle, I take the clippers and cut back some of the offending trackside brush, After seeing the crowd of railfans as well as myself, setup for a northbound, Marty no doubt wondered what was coming. He would soon find out as his train met 931, we could hear him inquiring about their lead engine over the scanner with 931s crew, and he warned them Gary was up at the station along with a bunch of people waiting to see them. 931s engineer replied they were warned before they left Saratoga that people would be out taking photos of that engine. Then the scanner fell silent, and a happy calmness settled over me, knowing I had eliminated “most” everything that can go wrong in executing these night photos. What better location to see one of the NS Heritage units than here, up close, going past the Plattsburgh Station? Several minutes pass by, then the welcome low rumble characteristic of GE prime movers reaches our ears, and every ones attention is on the crossing at Dock St. as the gates and lights are activated and NS 1070 comes into view! I fire off an awareness flash of the lighting for the crew out of habit, they’ve been told I’m in here, and watch as the Wabash cab rolls into the scene. Suddenly they are at my mark, and I press the shutter release, capturing the moment! Then attempt a wave as the cab passes by. After examining the LED monitor, I conclude part of the appeal of this location is the obvious contrast between the ugly weed growth in the foreground, the glamorous Wabash heritage engine, and the elegant ex-D&H station in the background. Glowing after shooting this scene successfully Shot on September 15th, 2013 at 21:27. Special thanks to Kevin Burkholder for making this possible, and Al Whalen for a timely “heads up” on 931s time at Ticonderoga!
GENSET REPREVE: NRE-built CP 3GS21B-DE 2100 and 2101 have not been returned to NRE as planned, and in September they were and split up and restarted with CP 2100 now working Calgary Yard, and CP 2101 working in Toronto Agincourt Yard. NRE and CP have agreed to continue to test the pair for an unknown extended period.
The duo were constructed at NATIONAL RAILWAY EQUIPMENT (NRE) at VMV, Paducah, KY in September 2008. They were sent to CP in December 2008 for long term testing in a lease arrangement with the Province of Ontario, this first lease arrangement ended this summer. These two photos are courtesy of Bob Heathorn and Bill Sanderson.
As of October 1st, 2013, CP has 144 locomotives TUUS (Stored unserviceable), and 195 TUS (Stored Serviceable).

List from the auction sale, plus the most recently RETIRED units, with some SOLD since then, as indicated below). In September, Respondek purchased at two more units from CP and Mark Mautner got shots of them September 22nd in transit on NS to Granite City. IL. The units are Ex-CP GP9u 1602 and ex-SW900 SLUG 1015. The slug is in fair shape and the geep is serviceable. The pair were shot by Mark Mautner literally 30 minutes after delivery from the Terminal Railroad Assocation ( TRRA) on the "102" job. Former CP Rail GP9u 1602 and SW900/slug 1015 are seen on the Port Harbor Railroad at Granite City, IL Sept 25th. Mark believes the ex-CP SW1200RS 8166 and the ex CP GP40-2 4615 should be in full service by mid-October, as both are running but need minor tweaks by the mechanical department. The ex-CP GP9u 1602 looks great upon inspection and he feels it should not take much to get it running either. The slug will be stored for now. Port Harbor Railroad 1600 switcher is seen (on the rear end), at Granite City, IL on September 25th, switching out the new arrivals (ex-CP GP9u 1602, SW900/slug 1015 and SW1200RS 8166). CP says the closure was prompted by restrictions imposed by the Canada Transportation Agency on September 13th, 2013 which reduced the hours CP Rail could conduct load testing and idling in the Alyth Yard which is located a short distance from the residential community of Inglewood. The Alyth Locomotive Reliability Centre has been in operation for nearly 60 years. With the closure, CP Rail will eliminate 130 Calgary positions. All repair and maintenance work will be relocated to other CP facilities throughout the country. In September 2013 Canadian Pacific Railway lost a huge contract with container line OOCL (Overseas Orient Container Line), one of its two major intermodal agreements, to Canadian National, according to an update by analyst Cowen and Co. The deal was up for renewal at the end of the year. Cowen estimates the gain for CN to be around $105 million in 2014 intermodal revenue. Last month, Canadian Pacific told their shareholders no financial responsibility for the Lac-Mégantic, Quebec MMA rail disaster and had rejected a legal demand by the Quebec government that it help pay for the derailment cleanup in the devastated town. CP also nnounced that it would appeal the province’s legal order. The news had come one day after the provincial government had included the railway to a list of defendants it said are responsible for picking up the tab in Lac-Mégantic, where a Montreal Maine & Atlantic Railway (MM&A) train had derailed and subsequently exploded on July 6. As a result of the derailment millions of liters of crude oil leaked from the cars and severely impacted the environment and downtown area of Lac-Mégantic. “Canadian Pacific has reviewed the notice. As a matter of fact, and law, CP is not responsible for this cleanup,” said railway spokesman Ed Greenberg. “CP will be appealing.” Reportedly the legal notice states that the business’s named adhere to a provincial law that holds company’s accountable for the financial impact of an environmental disaster. The Quebec government said taxpayers should not be forced to pay for the cleanup. The derailment killed 47 people and led to a mass evacuation in the Quebec town of 6,000. The incident had since prompted a criminal investigation, several lawsuits and increasing concerns that local citizens might have to abandon Lac-Mégantic’s oil-covered downtown core. In the legal notice, the province had said CP was the main contractor responsible for the fateful shipment of crude oil that was being moved from the North Dakota oil fields to New Brunswick’s Irving refinery. CP had interchanged the crude oil cars to MM&A in Quebec prior to the derailment occurring. MM&A is already among the other companies named in the legal notice, however the U.S.-based railway had said it can’t afford to pay and had requested bankruptcy protection. Also, in a court filing, MM&A had said its insurance coverage was $25-million and had estimated the total cleanup costs would go beyond $200-million. (Canadian Financial News) On September 23rd, Joey Lemieux shot CP 9364 (leading), CP 9626 (trailing) and CP 8757 (DPU) on a crude oil train heading southbound at mile 76, CP Cartier sub on the North Shore of Ramsey Lake, Sudbury, Ontario. In late-August, CAD Railway Industries (Lachine, QC) released CP 6251 and 6226 the last known SOO LINE SD60 to be on their property. CAD is contracted to do warranty repairs on all the completed CP units. The overhauls included Tier 0+ compliance, installation of AESS (Locomotive Automatic Engine Start/Stop) to conserve fuel, and CP repaint and renumbering into the CP 6200-series. None received any cab upgrades. The rebuilt units also each received (PTC) Positive Train Control modifications at the CP St-Luc Diesel Shop. Back on June 28th, 2013, CP announced they were seeking expressions of interest and bids for all (or part) of their 42 unit SOO LINE SD6o/SD60M Fleet including the CAD rebuilt CP SD60/SD60M’s. Except for the handful activated and mentioned above, most of the CP 6200-series remain stored, with stacks capped. All the SOO SD60’s are stored unserviceable, and are for sale “As is”. CP is seeking a buyer, or lease with a buyout option for the entire fleet. The SD60’s were built at EMD Lagrange, IL in 1987-89,

Cowen points out that some customers may see the loss as indicative of larger problems under the surface, but company officials don’t think that’s the case. “Under its ongoing operational turnaround plan, CP has been producing solid improvements to its operating metrics,” the company wrote in an email. “However, a number of derailments in recent months and the aforementioned intermodal loss have some investors concerned that some of the efficiency and productivity gains may have occurred in part at the expense of customer service. While such concerns may be valid, we believe that CP's management should be able to find the right approach to improve operations without significant revenue losses. CP still has their intermodal contract with Hapag Lloyd.
