As of September 1st, 2013, CP had 144 locomotives TUUS (Stored unserviceable), and 195 units TUS (Stored Serviceable), across the system.
CP SD30C-ECO 5010 is only a month old and is leading a westbound empty ethanol train through Fonda, NY at dusk on August 6th. The “C” denotes increased cash worthiness of the locomotive cab, frame and fuel tank. and not the wheel arrangement. The “ECP” demotes the Eco-Friendly emissions systems which required the flared radiators. This locomotive is in essence an SD40-2 with new fuel tank, frame, electrical system and cab, with ECO mod’s on the engine. In the photo by Aaron Keller, the unit is actually on CSX trackage in Fonda, NY.
As we went to press, it was leading ethanol train 642 with two SD40-2’s from Chicago to Montreal and was to head down on the D&H. Jay Butler bagged it CP 642 with SD30C-ECO CP 5010, ICE 6433, DME 6364 passes eastbound through Tilbury, ON August 2nd, 2013.

On her first assignment CP F9B failed on the Royal Canadian Pacific junket to Crowsnest Pass on July 26th and was returned to Calgary for repairs. Lead unit FP9Au 4107 had trouble loading and for a short time, only CP FP9Au 4106 powered the train, until a GE was called to the rescue at field. In August all three units returned to service as an A-B-A trio. A special run between port Moody and Mission, BC operated mid-August with 4106, 1900, and 4107. In late-August the trio again departed Calgary deadheading with four passenger cars on an Intermodal freight train to Port Moody, BC for another special Run to Mission, BC and return to Port Moody, BC. The three CPR F units and four cars then deadheaded back to Calgary, AB on another CP Intermodal freight, and was at Calgary for the RCP train, as went to press.
CP FP9Au 4107 and siblings were shot by Kevin Dunk among the rubble of the tragic Frank, AB land Slider at MP86 on the Crowsnest Sub. This A-B-A set with CP #4107-1900-4106 is seen powering under the old telegraph wires through the S curve westward on the Crowsnest Sub. Normally photographers try to avoid messy wires but in this case these old telegraph wires are rather historic and tell a story of the infamous 1903 landslide. There’s much information out there on the internet about the Frank Slide, just Google ‘Frank Slide’ and you’ll see what I mean.
Canadian National Railway sold three cars from their executive fleet to Canadian Pacific Railway numbered CP 1, CP 2 and CP 3. However only Track inspection theater car CN 1060 “Sanford Fleming” (CP 1), and CN heavyweight platform observation car 1058 (CP 2) were repainted CP Candy Apple Red at Quality Rail in East St. Louis, IL are in Calgary. The third car, former Wisconsin Central was damaged during a yard move in Edmonton, and has since been sent to a museum in Wainwright, Alberta still in her Wisconsin Central uniform lettered CP 3.
CP Script Painted GP38-2 3084 has yet to operate on a passenger special since her NRE overhaul and repaint at Silvis, IL earlier this year. During August the unit has been assigned only in freight service. Most recently CP 3084 has been coupled with two other CP GP38-2’s and operating in local service between South Edmonton (188 miles from Calgary, AB) to CN Clover Bar, AB, located on the North side of Edmonton.
Ex-CP SW1200RS 1271 which was sold to NRE Silvis earlier this year, has been resold to EMD’s lease fleet, and is now lettered GMTX 509.

Still stored in Winnipeg, MB are the remaining SD9043MACs (CP 9100-9128, 0130-9132, 9134-9137 and 9139- 9160), and supposedly remain for sale, even though the CP Surplus Sale has ended.
The following rebuilt CP and SOO SD60/SD60M units are for sale or lease:
Correction: CP GP38-2 3028 and CP Slug 1128 is in fact working in Winnipeg, MB. The slug was not retired as previously reported.
On August 25th, ex-CP SW1200RS 8166 was placed in service on the Port Harbor Railroad (Owned by Terry Respondek of Respondek Rail Corp). He is an Illinois Terminal railroad fan and said he would like to paint this unit in Illinois Terminal’s green and yellow inspired colors with Poert Harbor Railroad lettering. During the 1960’s, this CP switcher was assigned to Sudbury, ON and at times visited Toronto and Hamilton. By mid- September the Port Harbor Railroad they should have the ex CP 4615 running, and ex-SOO ( MILW paint ) 2064 undergoing prep work and will be the last of the three to enter service. In late-August, Respondek looked into purchasing DME GP38 3903 from CP, but later passed on it.
Mark Mautner photographed the 8am Port Harbor Sunday switcher moving their ex-TRRA SW1200 1239 ( built by EMD in 1965 ) onto track #3 so that they could use their ex-CP SW1200RS 8166 ( built by GMD in 1960 ), marking this the first revenue run of 8166 since purchased by Respondek Rail Corp from CP in late-June 2013.
Ex CP SW1200RS 8166 is shown with a long string of inbounds for the port received from the Norfolk Southern, at America's Central Port in Granite City, IL August 25th.
CP intends to retire and sell off all of their older SOO/MILW GP40’s, and the six remaining ex-B&M GP40-2’s this year. In July CPGP40 4615 and SOO 2064 had arrived at Respondek Rail Corp long with SW1200RS 8166 to operate on the Port Harbor Railroad. CP GP40-2 4651 and 4655 were retired in July leaving five in service. CP GP40-2 4654 and 4655 were retired in August 2012, and sold in January 2013 to Metro East Industries East St. Louis, IL for overhaul. They were then purchased by United States Sugar Corporation (USSC) and numbered USSC 503 and 504.
Locomotives noted at St-Luc Yard on August 27th:
OnAugust 27th, your Editor and my good friend John Duncan compiled this St-Luc locomotive round up August 27th. The TEC train with CP GP20C-ECO 2205, departed at 12:00 noon towards the west loop of the yard. Quebec-Gatineau SD40-3 6908 and 6913 were alone in the main yard, still wearing QGRY patches with the former GEC-Alstom grey and orange livery. Yard power CP GP9u 8231 and 8234 were switching in the main yard.
As there is only one in Canada, we had the luck of the Irish as we caught our very first SD30C-ECO! During the mid-afternoon of the 27th, a westbound empty crude oil tank train departed St-Luc Yard (at Ballantyne), with CP SD30C-ECO 5010 leading DME SD40-2 6071 and 6426. About 20 Minutes later, the“Dorion Turn” departed behind her with a pair of back-to-back Candy Apple Red CP GP38-2’s (3047 and 3108), and a graffiti-free action yellow and black CP Rail “van”. A short but great looking consist! After the Crude oil train departed I had the chance to chat with the Dorion Turn Engineer Mac Allaire, and CP engineer Guy Taillefer who doing was doing the roll by for the WB empty ethanol train, and are both fans of CRO. Guy had the chance to ride CP 5010 earlier between Rousses Point, NY and Montreal and had high praise for the power of the rebuilt ECO locomotive, We will post photos in the next issue.

CP GP38-2 overhaul update:
The overhaul of GP38-2 and GP38AC locomotives to Tier 0+ compliance, upgrading with AESS (Automatic Engine Start/Stop), and repainting them into CP livery had been spread over three facilities: EMD-Progress Rail, National Railway Equipment, and CAD Railway Industries in recent months however, CP has been utilizing only NRE and CADRAIL to complete the SOO, D&H, and CP GP38-2,and CP GP38AC fleets.
BAD NEWS for Delaware and Hudson fans … D&H painted GP38-2 7303, 7304 and 7312 are all earmarked for overhaul and repaint into CP Candy Apple Red and will be used all around the CP system, and not necessarily assigned to the D&H. Many had been hoping that at least #7312 would retain her lightning stripe paint scheme however she arrived at NRE in Mid-August.

SOO SD60 overhaul update:
In early August, four of the CAD Railway Industries rebuilt CP SD60’s in storage on CP were activated, and leased out: CP SD60M 6262, CP SD60 6251, and 6247 were in service on lease to Quebec-Gatineau (QGRY), In late-August CP 6247 departed the QGRY and is no in Expressway service for testing. Francois Jolin snapped this terrific lash-up of three SD60’s (CP 6251, 6262, and 6247), leading an empty CP train over Quebec-Gatineau (QGRY) trackage rights on the Trois-Rivieres Subdivision (Quebec City to Montreal), on July 31st.
CP 6262, 6251 and 6247, operated on several grain trains on the QGRY and were returned to Montreal as 4th, 5th and 6th units on a QGRY Windmill train. They then departed on a CP Westbound and went all the way all the way to Thunder Bay repaying Horse power Hours owed by QGRY to CP. The trio returned to Montreal to back on the QGRY on the next grain train. The CP SD60M was never on the lead during the first half of the month, however when standard cab SD60 (CP 6047) was returned to CP, QGRY did use the SD60M as a leader. As of August 30th, the pair had departed QGRY and the following four units CP 6247, 6248, 6251, and 6262 were working on the CP Expressway train for fuel and oil testing. If anything goes wrong with them, they will be sent to CADRAIL for tweaking. CP used two SD60’s, CP 6248 first, and then CP 6247 at month end assigned to (MTL-TOR) Expressway Service. This was according to our sources for locomotive testing, and when complete will be returned to storage or lease.
On June 28th , CP announced they were seeking expressions of interest and bids for all (or part) of their 42 unit SOO LINE SD6o/SD60M Fleet including the CADRAIL rebuilt CP SD60/SD60M’s. Aside from the ones on lease to QGRY and the one being tested, all are stored with stacks capped. The serviceable, and unserviceable SOO SD60’s stored on the railway are all for sale “As is”. CP will consider sale or lease with a buyout option for the fleet. Interested parties can contact CP ASSETT DISPOSAL (www.cpr.ca) and then submit a formal letter. Link: https://www8.cpr.ca/enetp72/snp/Pages/ViewTender.aspx?Tender=3416
At this time CAD Railway Industries (Lachine, QC) is still contracted to overhaul the remaining units they have on their property to Tier 0+ compliance, equip them with AESS (Locomotive Automatic Engine Start/Stop) to conserve fuel, and to repaint and renumber them to the CP 6200-series. None received any cab upgrades. The rebuilt units receive (PTC) Positive Train Control modifications at the CP St-Luc Diesel Shop. However things could change as these units are now for sale.

The following 20 CP SD40-2's are being done this year: 5415, 5672, 5691, 5728, 5734, 5735, 5745, 5789, 5869, 5918, 5933, 5934, 5950, 5971, 5980, 5983, 6027, 6039, 6056 and 6606, and these SD40-2's and SD40-2F's are earmarked for ECO rebuild beginning in 2014: SD40-2’s 5648, 5787, 5795, 5844, 5902, 5924, 5930, 5931, 5940, 5944, 5947, 5948, 5967, 5992, 5997, 5998, and 6006, and SD40-2F’s: 9000, 9002, 9005, 9010, 9016, 9018, 9022, and 9024.
In August the first SD30C-ECO in Canada was seen in Ontario on CP 640-065 with CP 8717 leading, and DME 6071 and CP 5010 (ex-CP SD40-2 5729), trailing. Here she is departig Paducah, Kentucky enroute to Minnesota in late June. (Terry Redeker photo) .
Jay Butler photographed CP 641 with CP SD30C-ECO 5010 on the point as it approaches Tilbury, ON heading to Walkerville. ON August 13th, the first SD30C-ECO in Canada!
Geoff Elliott snapped the same unit returning to the USA leading CP train 641 and seen approaching Belle River, Ontario westbound with empty Ethanol tank cars bound for the North Dakota.
On August 21st, the much travelled CP 5010 with two DME SD40-2’s led a crude Oil train (642 or 608) from North Dakota, Ontario, Quebec and down the D&H to Albany, NY The train was loaded onto a barge and was shipped to Irving Oil in Saint John, NB, a really long routing! CP 5010 and the two DME’s were then used on a local D&H train in New York State. Then on August 28th, I had the luck of the Irish as I caught my very first SD30C-ECO during the afternoon of August 27th, which had just arrived in Montreal from New York State with a westbound empty crude oil tank train with CP SD30C-ECO 5010, DME SD40-2 6071 and DME SD40-2 6426. At press time the unit had departed the D&H and returned to Montreal, and on August 30th, was in Chicago, IL. My photos will be coming next month. (William H. Baird).
CP GP20C-ECO 2205 led Canadian Pacific TEC Train ran on the 36 mile Owen Sound Sub. to Orangeville, ON located North-West of Toronto and is operated by the Orangeville Brampton Railway. The GP20C-ECO was a real treat to see on the former CP line. It looks very much like an GP60, and sounds like it to with the 710 prime mover. (Our beautiful CRO SEPTEMBER COVER photo was taken by Steve Thomas)
All 30 GP20C-ECO units (nos. 2200 -2229) from their first order from EMD’s Muncie, IN plant had been delivered, and are in service assigned to St-Paul, MN, except for CP 2200 and 2212,which are assigned to Medicine Hat, AB. As well n in July, CP 2212 was operating in Ontario assigned to the Galt Sub on a Ribbon Rail and CP local trains. These are the first GP20C-ECO locomotives to operate in Canada, and are here for crew familiarization.
The following GP7u/GP9u locos have already been scrapped at ABC Metals.
CP 1501, 1503, 1505, 1515, 1519, 1525, 1528, 1565, 1566, 1567, 1568, 1569, 1570, 1581, 1687, 1588,1603, 1609, 1611, 1617, 1621, 1638, 1644, 1647, 1649, 1682,1687, 1692, 1696, 1697, 8224, 8229, 8240, 8242,and 8264.
Non-Montreal assigned CP GP9u’s CP 1545, 1564, 1651, and 8244 are stored with stacks capped at St-Luc. Montreal assigned CP 8241, 8219, 8247, 8228. 1690 (ex-TH&B), 1688 (ex-TH&B) and 1608 are also currently stored at St-Luc Yard.
CP GP20C-ECO 2205 leads one of the two CP TEC (Track Geometry) trains eastbound through Tilbury, Ontario on the CP Windsor Sub August 7th. (Jay Butler photo).
In mid-August CP 2205 and the TEC train evaluated the trackage ion the Orangeville – Brampton, and then did geometry testing on (Ex-Ottawa Central, nee-CN) VIA-owned trackage between Coteau, QC and Ottawa, ON. On August 23rd the TEC train went westbound to Toronto on the CP mainline, and a press time was still assigned to the TEC train. The other TEC train has CP GP38-2 7309 at the point and was also in Ontario in late-August.

On August 21st, Kevin Dunk photographed a nice clean CP 9353 a GE ES44AC ‘Geevo’, with mid-train DPU CP AC4400CW 8528 and rear DPU sister CP 8653 working an empty southbound coal set along Bummers Flats at MP5.6 on the Windermere Sub. With all the coal that runs in this region it’s a real challenge to make these trains look interesting and photogenic and Kevin does it!

Some great passenger train variety here: The CP ROYAL CANADIAN PACIFIC at 4:00MINS, and starts with ROCKY MOUNTIANEER, a CP freight, and WEST COAST EXPRESS trains. Andy Cassidy shot this video September 4th. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boyi_i_vngg
Eastbound CP train 242 in Taylor, MI had CP 9727 and CEFX 1026 lifting PAL 2103, and 2108 on August 30th. Both units en-route to Vermont Railway for lease. (Kenneth Borg Photo with thanks).
On August 5th, Iowa Interstate Railroad (IAIS 513), a special business consist being pulled by the Rock Island heritage locomotive came around a corner and struck this Canadian Pacific hi-rail truck trying to get off the tracks at Davenport, Iowa at the Fairmount Street crossing. The CP truck driver got on the wrong set of tracks and travelled 3 miles on the wrong railroad before realizing his mistake. Thankfully nobody was injured. After a 2.5 hour delay to remove the truck from the rail the train was able to continue to South Amana. Locomotive 513 suffered little damage and was back in regular service later that evening after receiving repairs. (Photo by Erik Rasmussen with thanks)
These photos were taken on the CP Brooks Sub June 28th at the east end of Alyth Yard over the Bow River showing the collapsed CP bridge following the massive flooding in Calgary, AB this summer. The railway bridge collapsed because the one of the concrete piers sank into the Bow River and as this bridge is 100 years old, the concrete footings did not go all the way down to the bedrock as is today’s standard. You can see the CP crews re-building the tracks so CP can use the one bridge to access all the tracks in the yard. They have not replaced the bridge and for now it remains a bottleneck in the traffic flow.
Built in Montreal in 1887, #29 (originally carried the road number CP #390, then #217, before taking on CP #29 in 1913 is seen on display in front of CANDIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY Gulf Canada Square (CP corporate offices), in July 2013. CP will soon be moving from this location east of town, to the former Ogden Shops. (Photo by Kevin Andrusia).

CP GP9u 1682 was originally built by GMD in 1950 as a “GP7” for the Toronto Hamilton and Buffalo and numbered TH&B #72 and was used in passenger and freight service. Acquired by CP Rail, she was rebuilt in 1987 with a more powerful 1,750 HP 16-567C engine block replacing the original 1,500 HP 16-567B prime mover. CP retained the GP7u designation fir the ex-TH&B units (CP 1682-1687), even though technically they were rebuilt into a GP9u model. CP 1682 was electrically upgraded, and the nose was chopped, and was painted into the late 1980’s version of CP Rail livery with no Multimark. This geep has no dynamic brake blister and was assigned to yard service. She was retired on September 30th, 2011 and was moved to to the SRY shop in New Westminster, BC for parts stripping, and last year was scrapped in Langly, BC. The salvaged parts were shipped to EMD/Progress Rail, and in 2012 was released from the facility in Mayfield, KY as a rebuilt CP GP20C-ECO #2212. This photo was taken in 1991 by David K. Howard.

Today, the salvaged parts of TH&B #72 are alive and well in the workings of EMD/Progress Rail CP GP20C-ECO #2212! Ross Harrison shot her on June 5th, 2013, in Winnipeg, MB.
The standard Toronto yard switching and Hump power in the 1970's were the SW1200RS switchers, almost always set up elephant style. Between Main line moves, my father and I enjoyed watching the sets on the hump and working the Agincourt Yard as in this photo. CP 8118 and sibling push a cut of cars in September 1975. All the SW1200RS units are now retired.

With the retirement of some of the CP SD40-2F fleetall candidates for Progress RAIl/EMD SD30C-ECO rebuild, Kevin Dunk submitted the following: Going back to 1989, when CP Rail was taking delivery of their latest order of locomotive – the GMDt SD40-2F, CP’s first wide cab locomotive and first with full cowl and a (CN-styled) Draper taper!
Factory fresh CP 9002 accompanied by sister 9017 and SD40-2 6013 seen leading an eastbound ‘hotshot’ stopped at the east signals to the CP Saddle Rock siding deep in the Fraser River Canyon waiting for a westbound meet.
For many years the “Red Barns” (as they were affectionately called by railfans), often hauled the coal traffic as leaders from the East Kootenay’s Elk Valley Teck coal mines to the Roberts Bank coal port near Vancouver, BC. With the 1995 introduction of the GE AC4400CW to the CP fleet, these Dash 2F’s were then relegated to working wayfreights or any other kind of rail traffic across the system. Currently the complete roster is based out of Winnipeg but these engines can be still be seen anywhere from Montreal to Vancouver. This model has garnered much love and hate over the years from both railway crews to photographers. Many CP hogger were not pleased with the desktop style controls when used in switching operations, and how these non-airconditioned engines became rather hot during the summer months, especially between Kamloops and Northbend, BC. We can testify to many trains led by Red Barns with wide open front cab doors! Always best to photograph these Red Barns in the early hours of the day rather than late.
Kevin also submitted this CP RAIL rendering by Michael Eby, with a link to his website. At this time of their arrival CP was phasing out the black painted “Multimark”, instead going with the less expensive all Action Red with white stripes livery. During the 1990’s, two were repainted into CP Rail System (dual flag) livery, but sadly after 2000, none ever got repainted into the CP golden Beaver scheme which would have looked great. http://trainiax.net/index.php
