Unfortunately, only a quartet of CP SD9043MAC’s (CP 9108, 9134, 9142 and 9157) were activated for service, operating mostly between Winnipeg-Thunder Bay, with a couple visiting further east in Ontario and into Quebec. It appears it was more difficult and costly to restart more than four of them … at least for now.
Michael Berry caught SD9043MAC 9134 leading 2ith SOO 6044 and train 253 passing the Lasallle Station south of Montreal on December 26th.
Warming the cockles of railfan hearts this season … As of December 31st, 2013, seven of the previously stored SOO SD60’s were in service. Most of these are trailing units, but SOO 6027 was seen leading on December 22nd.. In service are: SOO SD60 6024, 6027, 6033, 6035, 6037, 6044, 6053. (SOO SD60M 6061 is stored unserviceable and therefore not active). Five are in SOO white: 6024, 6027, 6033, 6035, and 6037, and two are in SOO red: 6044 , 6053. SOO 6024 was the last to get activated after being stored in Bensenville, IL. Most of the fleet of CAD rebuilt SD60/SD60M’s (CP 6221 - 6262 inclusive), are all in service, and equipped as leaders, and have been seen across the country!
As of December 29th, 2013 SOO SD60M 6061 is stored unserviceable, CP SD60 6246 and 6247 (hit a truck), and SD60M 6262 are all at CAD (all stored unserviceable), and CP SD60 6248 is stored serviceable.
As we went to press …. Luc Lantier sent us photos of Expressway assigned CP SD60 6247 stopped at Perth, ON after a a truck collusion the morning of December 23rd. The handrtails and coupler suffered damage and the unit is sidelined for repair.
CP AC4400CW 9598 was also involved in a tree collusion one week ago, and was seen as the trailing power passing through Smiths Falls on December 23rd.
A lot of trains today in Smiths Falls due to the accident. The line was re-open at 11:00am.
On December 20th, Bryant Kayden was very fortunate to catch this unique consist. Two painted SD60’s (SOO 6027 and 6024) leading a westbound toward Glenwood, entering the curve at MP 110 on the Paynesville Sub (Sedan, MN). One of these days will be the last time we get to see a set of pure Soo Line power on the CP. I hope this was not that day!
On December 16th, Geoff Elliott photographed CP SD60 6257 and BNSF C44-9W4442 pause in the siding in Belle River, Ontario to allow a couple eastbounds to pass.
Jay Butler received this terrific lash up for Christmas! On December 24th CP 608 east through Haycroft, ON with CP 6241-BNSF 7685-BNSF 708-CREX 1205.
At Beaurepaire, QC on Montreal’s west island December 15th, Guy Pascale Arcoutte braved the snow storm and bagged CP SD60 6257 and BNSF C44-9W 4442 splitting the wind at track speed leading westbound oil train 609 over the busy CP / AMT Vaudreuil Sub.
On December 12th in the village of St-Clet, QC, Francois Jolin photographed two of the CAD-rebuilt CP SD60 6239, BNSF C44-9W 4442, and CP SD60 6257 leading Canadian Pacific oil train #608 eastbound over the double track Winchester Sub.
CP has leased a total of 100 CP ES44AC, and AC4400CW units to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. Beginning in September 2013, all the units are lead compatible and in November the amount was raised up to 82 units and is now up to 100 locomotives. The units are in a 36/64 split of ES44AC and AC4400CW locomotives.
CP ES44AC 8881 is now Off Lease to BNSF. As of December 29th, 2013 therere were 99 units leased to BNSF: 64 AC4400CWs and 35 ES44ACs. While a few are missing below, these unit numbers are confirmed on lease to BNSF:
CP “Candy Apple Red” has invaded Denver, Colorado! Under the gaze of a leased CP RAIL SYSTEM AC4400CW 9500-series,BNSF ES44C4 6762 gets re-positioned and added to a team that will later haul a string of freight out of the Denver Yard. (Photo by Derek “Buffie” Brown with thanks)
Derek also snapped CP ES44AC 8851 and 8837, about to lead a mixed freight out of the Yard Denver. CO. These were two of the first GE’s to be leased to BNSF back in in September.
CANDIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY HOLIDAY TRAIN ON FACEBOOK:
https://www.facebook.com/HolidayTrain
CP announced last week that its 2013 holiday train generated monetary donations exceeding $2 million and collected food donations totaling about 300,000 pounds for North American food banks. "This was a record year for the Holiday Train, and Canadian Pacific congratulates all those who rallied together in supporting communities in their fight against hunger," said CP Chief Executive Officer E. Hunter Harrison in a press release. The train stopped in more than 150 communities in Canada and the United States over a three-week period from Nov. 25 through Dec. 19. Major donations included $250,000 to both the Breakfast Club of Canada and Feeding America to support their national programs. Since 1999, CP's holiday train has raised nearly $9.5 million and collected 3.3 million pounds of food. Last year, the Class I raised slightly more than $1 million in donations. A snow squall impacts the area just in the nick of time to help bring some atmosphere to the holiday cheer. Here are sonme photos of the two trains submitted by our readers.

In December, Respondek/Squaw Creek Southern purchased CP SD40-2’s 5731, 5838, and 6617 for their coal operation in Southern Indiana.
In November, CP activated stored SD9043MAC 9108, 9134, 9142 and 9157. For the time being, these are restricted to Winnipeg-Thunder Bay service. CP’s fleet of SD9043MACs (CP 9100-9128, 9130-9132, 9134-9137 and 9139- 9160) have been stored outside in Winnipeg for a few years, and only four were able to be restarted by the Winnipeg Diesel Shop.
The following rebuilt CP and SOO SD60/SD60M units are for sale or lease:
CP GP38-2 overhaul update:
The overhaul of GP38-2 and GP38AC locomotives to Tier 0+ compliance, upgrading with AESS (Automatic Engine Start/Stop), and repainting them into CP livery had been spread over three facilities: EMD-Progress Rail, National Railway Equipment, and CAD Railway Industries. Currently CP is only utilizing NRE and CADRAIL to complete the SOO, D&H, and CP GP38-2,and CP GP38AC fleets.
GP38-2's released from EMD-Progress Rail (Mayfield, KY):
CP 3024, 3025, 3038, 3040, 3041, 3042, 3048, 3057, 3061, 3062, 3066, 3111, 3117,3126, 3127, 3128, 3129, 3133, and (former SOO) CP 4414, 4415, 4418, 4424, 4427, 4428, 4436, 4446, 4447, 4450, 4506, 4513, 4514, and 4515 completing the contract. No more CP GP38-2's have been scheduled for overhaul at EMD-Progress Rail in Mayfield, KY:
GP38-2’s / GP38AC’s released from NRE (Silvis, IL):
CP 3001, 3007, 3013, 3017, 3020, 3023, 3033, 3050, 3072, 3075, *3084 (*Script), 3096, 3103, 3124, 3134,

The CP GP38AC locomotive designation “GP38AC” remains following overhaul, and as the others, does not have any of the Dash 2 electronics. The major difference between the two is the performance control electronics where the GP38AC has to be set manually, and the Dash-2 is set by modual- cards. NRE will not be not be altering their original GP38AC classification.
GP38AC’s and GP38-2’s for overhaul at NRE (Silvis, IL):
Currently at the NRE-SILVIS SHOP:

During the first week of December, K, J. Larson bagged CP 3020 and 4441 on the test track at NRE. The same day, CP 3096 was about to be sandblasted, and CP 3074 was inside the paint booth.
On December 11th, CP 4441 was released, and CP 7309 on December 18th, CP 3020 was released in mid-December after a longer than usual stay for repairs and wheel slip issues.
In Late December, CP 3074 was in the paint shop. CP 3005 has been painted and was being assembled for testing. CP 3096 has been sandblasted and next gets reassembly of the generator, and prime mover. CP 3010 has been assembled and will be next in the paint booth once 3074 is done. CP 7309 is also painted and should ship by year end. CP SD30C-ECO update
CP SD30C-ECO 5000-5017 and 5019 have been delivered from Progress Rail in Mayfield, KY, with CP 5019 arriving on the property December 13th. Only one of the 20 units remains to be released from Mayfield , with CP 5018 expected to be released in early January 2014.
Rebuilt from SD40-2 cores and frames at the EMD-Progress Rail Shop in Mayfield, KY., the 20 units are powered by a new 12 cylinder 3000 hp 12-710G3F engine. The SD30C-ECO locomotives meet Tier 0+US emissions standards and are currently assigned to St. Paul. MN. As their production was behind schedule and delivery was delayed, EMD compensated CP.
Further information about ECO re-powering can be found here:
http://www.progressrail.com/repowered-locomotives-710ECO.asp
The former SD40-2 numbers of the 20 CP SD40-2's completed into CP SD30C-ECO 5000-5019 in 2013 are: 5415, 5672, 5691, 5728, 5734, 5735, 5745, 5789, 5869, 5918, 5933, 5934, 5950, 5971, 5980, 5983, 6027, 6039, 6056 and 6606
Still to be confirmed officially, if there is a second order, it could utilize the following SD40-2's and SD40-2F's earmarked for consideration for ECO rebuild beginning in 2014: SD40-2’s 5648, 5787, 5795, 5844, 5924, 5930, 5931, 5940, 5944, 5947, 5948, 5967, 5997, 5998, and 6006, and SD40-2F’s: 9000, 9002, 9005, 9010, 9016, 9018, 9022, and 9024. A new order has not yet been announced.

CP GP20C-ECO update
To date, units up to CP 2264 have been delivered. The GP20C-ECO units from the second order and assigned to Canada; Four that arrived at Toronto Agincourt Yard on November 5th: (CP 2251, 2257, 2255, 2253), However we have learned that Toronto Yard is to eventually receive 20 units of the current 40 locomotive order (CP 2250-2269). Three others will be assigned at Welland, ON. Currently 2230-2249 are assigned to Alyth Yard, and 2250-2269 are assigned to Agincourt Yard. A total of 150 GP20C-ECO locomotives will be constructed for CP. All units from the first order of 30 GP20C-ECO units (CP 2200-2229) have been delivered from EMD’s Muncie, IN plant, and are in service, and assigned to St. Paul, MN.
Retired CP GP9u 1548, 1578 and approximately 15 others will be dismantled by J&L Consulting in Pickering, ON as part of the CP’s GP20C-ECO rebuild program. As these 17 geeps are not road worthy for long distance, this will save CP the extra repairs needed to make them road worthy in order to travel all the way out west. Any other stored Geeps that are road worthy, are to be marshaled, and prepared for transit to Coquitlam, BC. At the SRY shop, J&L Consulting has been contracted to drain their fluids before being delivered to the dismantling spur at ABC Metals Surrey Yard. The only salvaged parts are the complete truck assemblies with combos. J&L have built special rail systems for loading these truck parts onto flatcars. This flatcar pool of six cars, cycle back and forth between BC, and PRS in East Chicago. In November , CP received 2237, 2239-2248, and these are now in Calgary, assigned to Alyth Yard, The second GP20C-ECO order is expected to be completed by year end,

The following GP7u/GP9u locos are to be scrapped at ABC Metals:
STLH 1502, CP 1507, 1521, 1522, 1529, 1535, 1540, 1541, 1550,1554, 1563, 1571, 1574, 1582, 1587, 1593, 1596,1598, 1601, 1629, 1531, 1640, 1642, 1643, 1684, 1690, 8213, 8217, 8219, 8221, 8222, 8228, 8232, 8237, 8238, 8241, 8244, 8247, 8251 and 8275. Fortunately, CP GP9u 1608 was removed from this to be scrapped list, and was donated in operating condition to Exporail in 2013.
Two CP Geeps that were not road worthy (CP 1548 and 1578), were scrapped locally at K&K Recycling in Pickering, ON. Contrary to many reports, retired ICE GP9 103 and stored unserviceable ICE GP9’s 105 and 114, (all ex-SOO), are not road worthy, and are to be scrapped locally in Nehant, IA, according to our ICE source.
CP GP9 8275 is former is ex-Soo Line GP9 2555, and originally a Wisconsin Central unit. I don’t know where this unit got its last paint job done, but it sure stood out in the crowd. It looked almost fluorescent. People around the shop thought it was a new unit, not realizing it was headed for the scrap heap. These were taken on June 8th, 2013. She was built by EMD as WC 2555 in 1955, acquired by SOO in 1961, and retained the same number. It was rebuilt by CP and repainted and renumbered to CP 8275 in 1996. She was retired May 5th 2013. Unlike the original “CP” GP7/9’s that went through the major rebuild program in the 80’s, this unit and others got a different upgrade. I didn’t get a good look at everything, but a few notable differences between it and the original CP fleet are the high headlight vs. nose headlight, regular corner steps vs. vertical steps, short nose top hatch vs. none, no dynamic brake vs. DB, lever handbrake vs. wheel type, small US style brake heads and Green Shoes vs. eighteen inch heads and standard shoes. (The green shoes have a lower coefficient of friction vs. standard shoes). The cab layout was quite a bit different as well, all old style. And you know, I didn’t take a picture of the control stand for some reason and I can’t recall if it had an original style drum controller or not. Again, I didn’t take notes… Bad me! The unit was recently sent over to SRY in New Westminster and has since been shipped to ABC Metals for scrapping.

The CP’s Coquitlam Diesel Shop
(By Andy Cassidy)
On July 6th, 2013 I visited the CP Coquitlam Diesel Shop to see what was there of interest. located at Mile 111.9 on the CP Cascade Sub. After a chat with the Planner of the day I had a walkabout and grabbed a few shots. Three of the Five assigned EMD MP15DC’s were tied up at the shop. CP 1441 & 1444 were back to back with the CP 3004 (GMD GP38AC), sitting at the west end of Track 1. The CP 1442 was sitting over on the East end of the shop on Track 4 with some problem I can’t recall now. (I need to keep better notes). Both the 1441 and 1442 are currently Tied Up Serviceable (TUUS).
The CP 9815 (GE AC4400CW), is sitting inside the shop on the East End of Track 1. This unit is again the current lead unit on the annual CP Christmas Train, and you can see the Tie Wrap Anchors stuck all over the cab here. I hope to be able to catch a shot or two of it when it comes by this Monday, Dec 16th. I also took a few shots of the rear Self Steering Truck from the lower level. Something of a different perspective. As you can see here, changing brake shoes on these units is not the easiest thing to do.
The CP 9838 (GE AC4400CW), sitting behind the 9815 is in for a Turbo change. The old turbo is sitting on the upper platform beside the unit. You GM guys will note there is no mechanical connection to the turbo. It’s all exhaust driven. It’s a lot easier to change one of these as opposed to a GM unit.

Dakota Plains Holdings Inc.'s Pioneer Terminal expansion in New Town, N.D., is nearly finished and was commissioned on Dec. 18, the company announced last week. The $50 million project includes a double loop track to accommodate two 120-car unit trains, a high-speed loading facility designed to handle 10 rail cars simultaneously, and transfer stations to receive crude oil from local gathering pipelines and trucks. Canadian Pacific will serve the loading facility. One gathering pipeline already is in service and is expected to handle about 8,000 barrels per day, Dakota Plains officials said in a press release. Construction also continues on a $15 million frac sand terminal the firm is jointly building in New Town with Agnomen Corp which is to open in May 2014, and be served by CP, the terminal will feature 8,000 tons of fixed sand storage space, an enclosed translating facility and four ladder tracks. Interim frac sand translating is expected to start in January while construction of the permanent facility continues, Dakota Plains officials said. The Dakota Plains/AGNOMEN joint venture recently secured its first third-party marketer frac sand shipment for January. The customer will use its own rail cars to augment the joint venture's fleet, said Dakota Plains Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Craig McKenzie.
