CP on NS (ex-D&H): Norfolk Southern train 30T roars past the long defunct Blue Seal Feeds mill and gets ready to storm up the Howes Cave Grade after descending down Schoharie Hill. Dean Splittgerber shot her on April 19th working on the Norfolk Southern Freight line at Central Bridge, NY.

CP 7309 Arr Calgary, AB May 21

In Mid May, Steve Koop Angelicola caught D&H GP38-2 7304 running some cars back to the old Plattsburgh Air Force Base on a bright spring morning. 7304 has definitely added some interest to the D11 local for the last couple of weeks.

D&H GP38-2 7303 is currently out-of-service at the St-Luc Diesel Shop for repairs. You will note the doors beneath the cab are opened on both sides to access the air racks and oilers for the truck bolster. As well, Air piping event recorders, and ccb26 racks are also located under the cab and accessed by those panels. The battery box covers are located further forward, just below  the cab door.  (Luc Lanthier photo)

Dennis Weber shot CP H-19's power with CP-SD30C-ECO 5045, SOO GP38-2 4413, and CP GP38AC 3015 at La Crosse, WI on May 3rd.

On May 18th, Dennis Weber clicked CP train 280 with CSX 5382 and CSX 319 leading the train at La Crosse, Wisconsin.

CP LOCOMOTIVE UPDATES

BAD NEWS:

A recent count of SD40-2 locomotives remaining active on the CP roster: As of April 1st there were only 13 on the roster. Then by April 18th, only seven were still operating on the entire system. The others are stored.  (Mark Forseille photo)

MORE BAD NEWS

Regarding the SD40-2 and AC4400CW units: As of May 20th, there were more than 200 of each type in storage for a total of over 600 CP units are stored!  In late May, CP's Chief Operating Officer (Keith Creel) stated the railways has approximately 665 units stored!  Theses CP units are stored at St. Paul, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary and Coquitlam. As well, some GP38-2 4-axle Yard power is stored and as we reported last month any previous three-unit yard power consists, are now reduced to only paired units. Basically it comes down to a poor economy, losing major contracts to haul goods, or the end of seasonal traffic such as Grain loads.  For these major reasons all Class one railroads must from time-to time store large numbers of locomotives.  CP use the following criteria to choose what locomotive models get stored:  Age of the Locomotive, Reliability, and its Performance.   The model series to be stored gets drained of fluids, the roof stack is covered, to prevent water corrosion, the Batteries are disconnected and sometimes removed, and depending on the storage location, the cab may get locked to prevent vandalism.

A visit to St-Luc Diesel shop (Montreal) on May 18, 2016 at 11:00am, noted the following locomotives:

CP 2205, 2251, 2260, 2266, 2282, 3024, 3032, 3047, 3048, 3053, 3089, 3099

Retired, Declared Surplus, Stored or Sold:

In May, CP posted Bay Window Caboose (DH 35719) for sale on their website.  The caboose is currently stored at the D&H yard in Saratoga Spring, NY.

https://www8.cpr.ca/snpevweb/snp/Pages/ViewTender.aspx?tender=4488

Re- the 25 units listed below as sold in the last auction: The only one retired was SD40-2 5697 (retired in 2011).  The other 24 units were still on the roster as of May 1, 2016, long after they were advertised for sale.  We can surmise now that CP will only have them leave the roster when they are sold !

Retirements:

Oh Boy, here we go. Officially there were "no recent retirements". However the 25 units listed below as "sold" in the last auction sale only one was actually in Retired status!  That being CP SD40-2 5697, which was retired in 2011.  The other 24 units sold, were still on the roster as of May 1, 2016, long after they were advertised for sale.  Therefore we can surmise that CP will only have them leave the roster when they are sold!

Sold:

The CP Asset Disposition on-line Auction ended on April 25th, 2016.

These CP's SD40-2s were listed for sale and have ALL BEEN SOLD!  CP5420, CP5612, CP5642, CP5697, DME6073, DME6083, DME6091, DME6201, DME6359, DME6360, DME6362, DME6363, DME6364, DME6365, DME6366, DME6367, DME6370, ICE6102, ICE6210, ICE6213, ICE6214, ICE6216, STLH5560, STLH5615, and STLH5651. CP LOCOMOTIVE REBUILD PROGRAMS

We have confirmed that CP FP9A 1401 is now being completed at the RELCO Shop in Albia, IA.  It is still unknown what the paint Scheme will look like, as it is apparently "Special Request" CP livery. So it could be anything at all, including the CP Business train paint scheme.   The locomotive has been completely rebuilt.  The refurbishment includes an EM2000 computer, and its own HEP equipment making it an F38A-3 of sorts!

Canadian Pacific Script-painted CP GP38-2 3084 was released from repairs in Winnipeg, MB and has returned to service currently working north of Calgary in the Edmonton area.  Back on October 2015, she was working in Scotford, Alberta (North east of Edmonton), when on AC05-30, CP 3084 was pulling into the spur at the SUNCOR oil facility with light engines as lead unit when she derailed and punctured her fuel tank.

CP GP38-2 RCL and Overhaul program:

CP is continuing installations of Remote Control (R/C) equipment on their GP38AC/GP38-2 units at both CADRAIL in Montreal, and at NRE in Silvis. IL  According to our contacts at NRE, an RCL install takes approximately 7 to 10 Days to complete.   The program can sometimes include overhauling the locomotive to Tier 0+ compliance, and upgrading with AESS (Automatic Engine Start/Stop), and full CP repaint.

NATIONAL RAILWAY EQUIPMENT - Silvis IL

NEWEST UNITS to arrive at NRE:

No new CP units arrived during the month of May due to a lack of needed parts for the CP GP38-2 upgrades.  However, as we went to press these parts had arrived, and more CP GP38-2's are expected at NRE Silvis shortly.   The last to arrive at NRE were CP GP38-2 3080 (April 19th), and was moved inside the shop on April 28th, and CP GP38-2 3094 (April 28th ) and was moved inside in May 3rd).

UNITS RELEASED from NRE back to CP:

 CP GP38-2 3023

 IN PROGRESS at NRE:

CP GP38-2 4417 - (ex-SOO) is now in Candy Apple Red and lettered. It is expected to be released just after we go to press June 1st.

CP GP40 4608 - (ex-SOO) stripping and sand blasting complete. The  rewiring is now underway and she will get prepped for the painting process.

CP GP38-2 7311 - (ex-D&H) Work in Progress on her Engineering Overhaul.

CP GP38AC 3000 - is in software and static testing (No Repaint scheduled)

CP GP38AC 3002 - is in software and static testing (No Repaint scheduled)

CP GP38AC 3016 - is in software and static testing (No Repaint scheduled because their repaints were done not that long ago and unnecessary.

SOO GP40N 2066 (nee-MILW GP40) – Installation of Nexsys III with LSI and DB Mechanical Governor completed, wiring will be completed by Month end, then it will get repainted.

Interestingly, SOO SD60 6033 is at NRE for wreck repairs.  The locomotive was undergoing the repairs in May.  As shown in the photos, a repaint will be needed as the repairs are extensive!

Former CP SW1200RS 1250 now owned by NRE, was also getting work on the same shop track beside her former Soo Line colleague!  She is owned by National Railway Equipment, and was acquired from CP back in 2013.

CAD RAILWAY INDUSTRIES Lachine QC

The only CP Remote Control GP38-2 currently being done at Cadrail is

(Former SOO) CP 4404. The last GP38-2's released from CAD with the RCL system, ZTR, cab modifications and repaint were CP 4442, 4508, and 4433 which were completed in January 2016.  No others are waiting for work on the property at present.

SOO SD60 overhaul - Contract Completed:

CAD Railway Industries (Lachine, QC), completed the former SOO LINE SD60 and SD60M overhaul and repaint contract for the Canadian Pacific Railway in August 2013. The overhauls included Tier 0+ compliance, installation of AESS (Locomotive Automatic Engine Start/Stop) to conserve fuel.  All are in Candy Apple Red and renumbered into the CP 6200-series, and each received (PTC) Positive Train Control modifications at the CP St-Luc Diesel Shop. They did not get any cab upgrades however.

 CP SD60's and SD60M's released from CAD during 2012 and 2013: CP 6221, 6222, 6223, 6225, 6228, 6229, 6230, 6231, 6232, 6234, 6236, 6238, 6239, 6240, 6241, 6242, 6245, 6243, 6246, 6247, 6248, 6249, 6250, 6251, 6252, 6254, 6255, 6256, 6257, 6258, 6259, 6260, and 6262.  All are in service, and equipped as leaders.

The SOO LINE painted SD60's status as of April 2016:

 SOO 6026, 6027, 6035, 6037 and 6053 all remain in service.

SOO 6024 and 6044 are still stored unserviceable since Dec 31st, 2015

In late-April 2016, SOO SD60 6033 was sent to NRE in Silvis for wreck repairs which are currently underway.

 CP SD30C-ECO  latest order Completed:

17 cars derail east of Saskatoon, SK

On May 11th, a Canadian Pacific train had 17-car train derailment east of Saskatoon, SK.  Repair worked through the night to clear the tracks, and reopened a siding adjacent to the crash at 12:30 a.m. CST Thursday. Work continues on repairs and safety inspections of the main line, according to a CP spokesperson.

On May 11th at around 3:45 p.m. CST, a westbound freight train derailed about 16 kilometres east of Saskatoon. A dozen of the cars were empty; the other five were carrying cement. Several tank cars came right off their wheels, leaving the cars lying on their sides and the wheels still on the track.

CP spokesperson initially said there were 11 cars which had derailed, but on Thursday morning updated that number to 17. She said there were no injuries and no reports of any hazardous leaks or fires.   CP said once the derailment occurred, it immediately enacted its emergency response process to get teams and equipment to the site. Local and government officials and agencies have been notified.  A full investigation will take place into the cause of the incident.  (CBC News).  http://tinyurl.com/jsqvjog

CP RCL Implementation:

CP increasing productivity and efficiency in rail yards by implementing remote-controlled locomotives (called RCL). A conductor operates the R/C equipped GP38-2 locomotive from the ground to switch out rail cars, instead of relying on an engineer inside the cab, conductors and switch-crew members can now perform this work on the ground. CP is now implementing this technology. CP spent $8 million in 2014 to install remote control equipment in over 50 locomotives for over 100 work assignments in their network. Then RCL implementation now continues at NRE in 2016.  CP has reduced many yard jobs, with the goal to save $12 million per year, by implementing remote control operations now and continuing over 2016.  Some of CP's main yards are already implementing the latest RCL operation, using their newest R/C modified GP38-2 fleet.  These modified units were done at Cadrail in Montreal, and at NRE in Silvis, IL.

Toronto Agincourt Hump Yard Then and Now:

Toronto's Agincourt Hump Yard was opened back in April, 1964.

THEN:

This shot was taken above CP's Toronto hump yard this year. The hump yard was closed in early 2013 under CEO E. Hunter Harrison's order, and all tegh tracks were lifted shortly thereafter. (Daniel Odette with thanks). At the time of closure was determined flat switching was more cost effective to meet CP's needs. I believe there is only 2 operating hump yards left on CP's network

NOW:

NS-CP merger talk helped raise CP Stocks

Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. raised its dividend and launched a share buyback program in April 2016, rewarding investors in the wake of the failed takeover bid for Virginia-based Norfolk Southern Corp.

Calgary-based CP said it will raise the quarterly dividend to 50 cents from 35 cents, and repurchase as many as 7 million shares or 5 per cent of its shares. The announcement coincides with the release of the company's first-quarter financial results, which beat analysts' expectations even as revenue slipped.

For the three months ended March 31, CP posted diluted earnings per share of $3.51 on revenue of $1.67-billion. Adjusted earnings per share rose by 11 per cent to $2.50. Analysts expected adjusted per-share profit of $2.41 and revenue of $1.6-billion.  Net profit rose by 69 per cent to $540-million, from the year-earlier quarter.  The operating ratio, a closely watched comparison of revenue and expenses, improved to 58.9 per cent.

The stronger U.S. dollar gave a boost to CP, which gets about 55 per cent of its revenue in U.S. dollars. The company trimmed expenses, ran faster, longer trains and raised freight charges to combat a 5-per-cent slide in revenue amid a slowing economy. CP's operating chief Keith Creel said in a conference call with analysts on Wednesday morning the company is consolidating its three regional divisions into two. Eliminating yards, unneeded sidings and mainline switches will help it reduce operating expenses further, the company said.  CP also raised its estimate for job reductions this year to 1,400 jobs this year from 1,000.

E. Hunter Harrison, CP's chief executive officer, said he was pleased with the results "particularly given the soft economic conditions we were faced with." He said he is sticking with his forecast of "double-digit" profit growth this year as the U.S. and Canadian economies rebound in the second half of this year. "It's a case of if not when," he said. CP posted double-digit declines in freight revenue for five categories of cargo, including crude oil (28 per cent), potash (12 per cent), and metals, minerals and consumer products (16 per cent.) Revenue from hauling forest products rose by 25 per cent and fertilizers increased by 14 per cent.

"CP's volume growth has been stunted by the global commodity recession, given its intermodal [container] volume exposure, at 37 per cent, is the lowest relative to its peers," said Lee Klaskow, a Bloomberg Intelligence analyst. "Meaningful growth beyond 2016 will be challenging without a recovery in commodity demand." CP's share price has fallen by 20 per cent in the past 12 months amid a broad sell-off of transportation stocks. The share price has risen by 8 per cent since the takeover was called off last week, in anticipation the company would repurchase its shares. CP cancelled a share buyback program last fall to focus on the $28-billion takeover of Norfolk Southern. But CP last week abandoned the attempt to become a coast-to-coast railway, faced with stiff opposition from the U.S. Department of Justice, a long list of rail customers, and Norfolk Southern itself.

Mr. Harrison repeated his view rail consolidation is the inevitable solution to the congestion and lack of new infrastructure the industry faces. "This is not going away. People will come to their senses," Mr. Harrison said. "I'm not worried about my legacy. I'm much more about creating shareholder value. But I would predict it's going to happen and it will work very well." The cancellation of the takeover bid prompted Steve Hansen, a stock analyst with Raymond James, to raise his share-price target to $210. He said CP's move ends the uncertainty that prompted a share-price discount to that of Canadian National Railway Co.  Share repurchases signal a company's board believes the stock price is under-valued, and can boost per-share earnings by reducing the amount of stock outstanding.  CP GP38-2 3084 was built in January 1986. This GMD-built GP38-2 Was painted in Tuscan Red and Gray with 1960's script lettering in March 2000 to be used as a back up for the Royal Canadian Pacific Train. Assigned to Alyth Diesel Shop in Calgary Alberta, she is used on locals when not working om CPR's "posh" Tourist train. Now with a repaired fuel tank (after a minor derail mishap three months ago, she has been released from the Winnipeg Shop and is currently working in the Red Deer, Alberta area. (The photo by Jim Sandilands shows CP 3084 working on Canadian Pacific business train in 2000 at Montreal West Station with mates CP FP9A 1400 and F9B 1900.  In late November 2000 Canadian Pacific sent a business car train composed of locomotives and cars from the Royal Canadian Pacific service to Montreal from Calgary for marketing purposes. While in Montreal the train stayed at Windsor Station (Terminus Windsor) and made a Saturday night dinner train trip to Hudson, Qc and return. The train left Calgary with FP7Au 1400, F9B 1900, GP38-2 3084, baggage-generator 95, stateroom car 79 N.R. Crump and business cars No. 77 Van Horne, No.78 Royal Wentworth and No.74 Mount Stephen. The baggage-generator and the N.R. Crump were left behind at St. Luc yard and business car No.73 Mount Royal was added to the consist for the move to Terminus Windsor. Walter Pfefferle just returned from a trip to Elkhart IN to catch the Norfolk Southern OCS. Pictures are posted in the South of the Border section. Here we see CP 96343 leading CP 5037 east through Butler IN May 24 2016.

In Elkhart IN he caught CP 893 leading CSX 5380 past the AMTRAK Station May 25 2016

For the past while Kevin Dunk has been hearing RR radio chatter about the "signals" at Sparwood, BC, but he had never known any to be located there.  On May 1st, 2016, he drove to Sparwood to check it out and discovered a whole set of brand new signals!  A small island of CTC boxes much like Fort Steele, but in this case, much more robust in size.

Kevin's first photo shows three of the new masts, including the big cantilever one at MP17.8, there's a fourth mast just west of the Finning Caterpillar compound at the end of the Sparwood Yard (west of here, behind photographer).  To add some drama I've included a train CP ES44AC 8884 and AC4400CW 8625 are seen passing the cantilever signals with a general manifest freight.  Sad news, the old buildings that used to be there are sadly all gone, and he included  an early photo taken at the same location taken back in 2010 for comparison.

One other bit of news is the sudden appearance of the CP Sparwood Facility, attached image and seen below.  It appears CP acquired the old apartments in brown, and converted the building to a bunkhouse, and added a few new buildings as well.  Currently it is being used by train crews, possibly CP are intending on running the Lethbridge crews to Sparwood, on a more regular basis ( agues only), and  it could be a matter of time maybe before the Crowsnest Sub is extended to Sparwood perhaps?  It is only 17 miles , just a thought (KD).

Kevin shot this train at a new spot he found near Lundbreck Falls, Alberta but this time doing a reverse angle.  Under great sunshine and sitting atop "Poop Hill", he calls it so after witnessing all the "poop" left on the small knoll by pesky gophers!  Anyway, we see westbound loaded U.S. grain with UP ES44AC 5550 and SD70M 4679 sifting through the cut at MP75.9 on the Crowsnest Sub. While unseen rear DPU CP AC4400CW 9609 is still working the hill from Lundbreck Falls about a mile back.

Some of you might have noticed a similarity with the these shots, the same power but this time at a brand new location - CPR's Riley siding on the Cranbrook Sub.  I've been wanting to get to this spot for some time, and when my Aussie mate (Charlie Harris) was visiting we decided to check it out.  This shot has CP ES44AC 8884 with CP AC4400CW 8625 climbing the steep grade out of Ft Steele with a westbound general manifest as Lakit Mountain in the background gazes onto the valley.  The other thing I wanted to bring up was the "For Sale" sign on the locomotive, a bit of railway sarcasm perhaps?

This shot was taken just 4 miles further west, has CP GP20C-ECO 2329 and SD30C-ECO 5006 working train V19 the "McConnel Turn" climbing up the same grade from Ft Steele with a load of coal bound for Castlegar's pulp mill and Tech's Trail smelter power plants.  The combo of ECO's has become a new operating practice as of late for the Golden Wayfreights, and of course the McConnel Turn, and the Trail, BC Hotshots out of Nelson as well

On May 5th Ron Visockis clicked CP ES44AC 9356 and CEFX AC4400CW 1048 expediting a hot shot eastbound stack train, destined to Montreal.

On May 18th, Ron caught am Armor yellow bird (UP 8901), pushing on the tail end of CP #650 at Belleville, ON with ES44AC CP 8904 leading the train.

On May 8th, Dennis Weber clicked DM&E Train 471 with a very colourful consist:  RCP&E 3431, RCP&E 6442, NS 8000, CP 8885, and RCP&E  6418 rolling through Stockton, MN.

On April 17th, Walter Pfefferle snapped this Full House:  CP 8750 and CP 8706 along with CP 8857 and CP 8615 waiting at CP Nissouri to get into London Ontario. CP 8750 was tied down with about 8000 feet of multis. On April 17th, 2016.

Richard Marchi shot CP GP38-2 7305 at St-Luc Diesel Shop in Montreal on October 12th, 2015 in faded CP Rail System livery. This EMD LaGrange-built locomotive is ex-Delaware and Hudson, nee-Lehigh Valley.

Ron Visockis shot CP 9677-8606 E-B past the track gang at Pentecostal Rd ON April 9th, 2016.

On April 13th, Ron Visockis clicked CP 9751 and 8647 passing through  Belleville East. ON.

Chad Smith caught CP 235 at Thamesford, Ontario (located at Mile 101 on the Galt Sub), with CP 8936 and 8868 leading.

He also bagged more GE's on an eastbound at another view point in Thamesford with CP 8830 and 8938. Both photos taken on May 22nd, 2016.

Luc Lanthier was in Montreal the afternoon of May 11th, and shot train 142 and 143 near at the Lachine Intermodal Terminal.

Bill Edgar took this fabulous photo of a trio of MLW C424 locomotives in classic CP Rail Action Red in idle with other CP and Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo motive power at the latter road's engine terminal in Hamilton, ON back on May 24th, 1981.

This terrific shot by Bill Edgar of two westbound trains, was taken at the CP crew change point in North Bend, BC in November 1993. CP SD40-2 5867 is just departing and CP 9020, a Red Barn SD40-2F, will soon follow with another train, both are destined to Vancouver, BC.

Power for CP Rail's Canadian is being switched at their Vancouver coach yard and city roundhouse just southeast of downtown in August 1978.  Access to this yard is through a horseshoe tunnel under the city from the Burrard Inlet, near the CP passenger station. Now of course, the Canadian is operated from the former CN station by VIA Rail, and the tunnel is used by Vancouver's Skytrain light rail trainsets. (Bill Edgar photo).

Candy cane stripes were still in vogue back in 1982 on CP Rail's original action red scheme. CP SD40-2 5701 bend around a curve as the train rolls by Saddle Rock siding near Yale, BC. Note the second unit has been repainted with the new wider stripes CP Rail livery.

At Kenora Station in June 1983, Bill shot this great view of the west yard throat and depot. as a hotshot freight is stopping for a crew change.  Scenes like this make me want to start drawing up a layout trackplan!  I can think of no better place to be inspired to model the Canadian Pacific than Kenora, ON. QUESTION: Can you count the number of pickup trucks in this photo?

CP SW900 6719, and its crew prepare to spot a CP mechanical reefer at Portage La Prairie, MB on a lovely June 16, 1986. The reefer displays CP's classy Script lettering scheme with silver paint with black ends.  These were common back in the day, but I did not enough photos of them .

On June 15th, 1986, CP FP7A 1418 and 1424 are shown displayed in a park, near the CP mainline in Medicine Hat, AB. The units have been restored to the original CP color scheme with block lettering. CP switched to script lettering in 1962, and to Action Red around 1968.

A group of MLW/Alco switchers including S2 7094 rest between assignments at the CP Roundhouse and turntable in downtown Vancouver, BC in August 1978. The foreground track was used to turn the Canadian passenger train consist after arrival and unloading at the CP station across town. This yard serviced industries and handled servicing of CP's passenger trains and locos until the property was re-purposed for Expo 86. By that time the Canadian was operated by VIA using the CN station. (Bill Edgar).

When Bill Edgar took this photo at Kenora, ON in June 1983, VIA's Canadian was still using CP Rail trackage east of  Winnipeg, MB.  Montreal Locomotive Works-built M636 (CP Rail 4729), idles away as the passenger train makes its station stop before continuing east to Thunder Bay, Ontario and along the north shore of Lake Superior.

A quartet of SD40-2's are in dynamic braking as they descend the east slope of Rogers Pass over Stoney Creek Trestle with an empty unit coal train on May 4th, 1978.  My one visit to this famous location was quite an experience, with concerns about grizzly bears (none spotted), and occasional snow squalls. But the most traumatic moment was when my camera case got away from me and started sliding down the face of the cliff. It caught on a bush, but then I had the task of retrieving it, which almost landed me over the cliff and into Stoney Creek. Probably the most harrowing event I've had doing railroad photography!  (Bill Edgar).
