BAD NEWS: As of April 1st, there were only 13 SD40-2 locomotives remaining in service on the roster. Then by April 18th, only seven remained operating on the entire system. The others are now stored.
CP has almost 200 GE AC4400CW's and GMD SD40-2's stored and spread out at many locations including St-Paul, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary and Coquitlam. As well, some GP38-2 4-axle Yard power is stored, and as we reported last month any previous three-unit yard power consists, are now reduced to only paired units. Basically it comes down to a poor economy, loosing major contracts to haul goods, or the end of seasonal traffic such as Grain loads. For these major reasons all Class one railroads must from time-to time store large numbers of locomotives. CP use the following criteria to choose what locomotive models get stored: Age of the Locomotive, Relieability, and its Performance. The model series to be stored gets drained of fluids, the roof stack is covered, to prevent water corrosion, the Batteries are disconnected and sometimes removed, and depending on the storage location, the cab may get locked to prevent vandalism.

Locomotive news sightings;
On April 13th, 2016 Dennis Weber shot the great Lashup on CP train 471 UP SD70AH 8919, UP AC44CWCTE 6021, and two SD40-3 units (RCP&E 3427 and 6407) were photographed at Dakota, MN.
Denis also caught CP 686 CP-8810, CN-2640, at LaCrosse on April 16th hauling a heavy ethanol train From Marquette, Iowa, destined to CSX Chicago. The train was rerouted on account a burnt bridge being out of service between Specht's Ferry, and Finley's Landing (at MP 57) in Iowa.
It is Ironic that four days after CP Dropped their takeover bid to buy Norfolk Southern, Steve Koop Angelicola shot morning's NS train 930 with five CP GEVO's getting back up to speed after stopping at the North end of Howard's siding in Westport for MOW to clear. CP power has been seen often on these NS trains lately but never this many.
NS then returned the favor to CP April 17th when Dennis Weber shot Norfolk Southern power leading CP train 471 with NS 6784 and leased CEFX 1028 rolling over the Mississippi River Bridge in LaCrescent, MN on April 17th.
Here is another shot of CP 471 taken the same day but at LaCrosse, WI with units NS 6784 and CEFX-1028.
CP on CN! On a gorgeous afternoon April 10th, Nicolas Houde shot CN 529 bringing a short train with three CP units (CP 8891, CP 8705, CP 8731), as it approaches Turcot West on the CN Montreal Subdivision.
CP on CN #2! Nine days later on the CN Montreal Sub April 19th, Nicholas shot CN L52921 19 exiting the short tunnel (that will soon be demolished), near Turcot West on the CN Montreal Subdivision, with a trio of Canadian Pacific units with CP ES44AC 8705 leading!
Geoff Elliot submitted this fine shot of a Big move on the Essex Terminal Railway (ETR) On April 20th,2016. Another CSX unit grain train is delivered to the ETR for forwarding to ADM out in Ojibway. Train arrived early this morning with CSX 3292 and 772 as power. Train was tied down at Dougal Ave. until T28's power, CP 5028, 6229, and 5024 were added to the head end. From there T28 pulled the 80 car empty train east onto the ETR and down past Howard Ave to clear the crossovers at Lakeshore. ETR GP9 #108 would have the honors of taking the train to ADM and it waited for 5024 to shove back to where it was waiting. Once ETR 108 was coupled on and had air on the train, T28/CSX power was cut away and ETR 108 headed for Ojibway while the CP/CSX consist headed back to the yard Windsor Yard
.
On April 8th, 2016, Kenneth Borg shot CP #241 heading westbound at Delray in Detroit, MI. CP 8850 is leading with CP 8513. Behind and Dead in tow are former CP SD40-2 5573 and SD40M-2 5490 both sold to NRE in March 2016. (SEE CP RETIRED LOCOMOTIVES SECTION)
At Cranbrook, BC on March 31st, 2016 Kevin Dunk shot this very rare five SD30C-ECO unit lashup, led by CP 5017. The second shot shows the same train but at Moyie, BC. |

CP 9738 and CP 8834 are shown eastbound at Belleville West in Ontario in this shot by Ron Visockis taken on April 6th, 2016.
Do You Like EMD's? On April 6th, at Lacrosse, WI, Dennis Weber shot this plethora of EMD products. On the left is CP train 471 RCP&E 6439, 6428, 6437, 3423 and 6418. On the right is the CP Roadswitcher, with CP 2326 and 2308. |
Dennis caught the same large EMD lash-up on CP 471 (RCP&E 6439, 6428, 6437, 3423, and 6418), as they departed LaCrosse, Wisconsin, over the CP Black River Bascule Bridge.
On April 18th, Walter Pfefferle photographed CP 551 rolling across Hwy 2 in Woodstock, Ontario with CP 8809 and UP 5549. The empty oil train was tagged on the end of some mixed fright up front. All the tank cars were DOT 117 's built in February 2016, and should meet the new requirements but lack the steel baffles on the ends.
This set was taken on April 18th, 2016, by Andy Cassidy: With an hour of photography time available whilst in the Port Coquitlam, BC area, I caught a couple of trains at the Westwood grade crossing, Mile 112.8 on the CP Cascade Sub. I generally have three locations to choose from when I get this time slot available on Monday afternoons. Either East of the CP Coquitlam Yard over in Pitt Meadows at Mile 109.4 on Kennedy Road, the Coquitlam Yard itself from the South side at the Port Coquitlam West Coast Express station, Mile 111.9; or here at Westwood St. Some of you may notice that various shots I take there are shown as either Coquitlam or Port Coquitlam. That's because Westwood is the boundary between the two cities. Coquitlam to the West and Port Coquitlam to the East where the CP yard is. So it depends on which side of the street I take my photos from.
In any event, I got there shortly after 1400 Hrs. It was a record setting day re the temperature, which at that spot was 33C, or 91F. Just unreal for this time of year. So almost right away there is some action coming at me from the yard. While I'm looking East towards the Coquitlam River Bridge in the distance, this idiot walks right by me down the South main and onto the North leg of the Wye! Then he proceeds to walk all the way down the ROW (off the tracks) to a point just before the bridge. It's fenced all the way down, so he must have a spot cut open down there to get through. The way he was motoring, this was no new trek for him. I just can't believe some people.
In the mean time a CP local Road Switcher assignment is heading West with a short train of Clycol cars for Pacific Coast Terminals in Port Moody. They have the CP 1126 (Ex GP35 now a non-powered Control Cab Daughter), leading the CP 3026 (GMD GP38-2) that's providing all the muscle. Some of you may recall that the CP 1126 was somewhat recently repainted and looks quite decent now compared to before. It was real ugly back then. The Glycol cars are nothing special to look at here, but when these cars are new they are either a nice shade of Green or Blue. Here you see some patch work on the paint of a few.
One of the crew members is giving me a wave from way back, so I got a good close up. I thought it may have been on of the guys I know, but I don't recognize the gentleman with those glasses on. They quickly pass by and to the relief of the motorists who don't have to wait long at the gates. Unlike the next train I caught which you'll see in the next set.

With many retired and sold a count of SD40-2 locomotives remaining active on the CP roster was sobering. As of April 1st there were only 13 on the roster, then only 17 days later, just seven CP SD40-2's were operating on the entire system, the others all stored.
Former CP SD40M-2 5490 (and SD40-2 5573 ahead of her) have been sold to National Railway Equipment. Luke Bellefleur shot CP 241 on April 8th passing Third Line, outside Chatham, Ontario with the pair being forwarded to the USA D-I-T behind the lead units. Note the missing number boards. They arrived at NRE in Illinois a few days later.
The remaining seven CP's Red Barn's remain on the roster, but have been stored since Oct. 31st, 2015. The numbers are: CP 9001, 9003, 9006, 9007, 9008, 9009 and 9015. The class unit CP SD40-2F 9000 was retired back in December 2012, and has been scrapped. All the other CP SD40-2F's are retired and sold, and a pair used in the SD30C-ECO program. CP Shifts Gears in Wake of Failed Norfolk Bid
ERIC ATKINS - RAILWAY INDUSTRY REPORTER
In April Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. raised its dividend and launched a share buyback program on Wednesday, rewarding investors in the wake of the failed takeover bid for Virginia-based Norfolk Southern Corp.
Calgary-based CP said it will raise the quarterly dividend to 50 cents from 35 cents, and repurchase as many as 7 million shares or 5 per cent of its shares. The announcement coincides with the release of the company's first-quarter financial results, which beat analysts' expectations even as revenue slipped.
For the three months ended March 31, CP posted diluted earnings per share of $3.51 on revenue of $1.67-billion. Adjusted earnings per share rose by 11 per cent to $2.50. Analysts expected adjusted per-share profit of $2.41 and revenue of $1.6 billion.
Net profit rose by 69 per cent to $540-million, from the year-earlier quarter.
The operating ratio, a closely watched comparison of revenue and expenses, improved to 58.9 per cent.
The stronger U.S. dollar gave a boost to CP, which gets about 55 per cent of its revenue in U.S. dollars. The company trimmed expenses, ran faster, longer trains and raised freight charges to combat a 5-per-cent slide in revenue amid a slowing economy.
CP's operating chief Keith Creel said in a conference call with analysts on Wednesday morning the company is consolidating its three regional divisions into two. Eliminating yards, unneeded sidings and mainline switches will help it reduce operating expenses further, the company said.
CP also raised its estimate for job reductions this year to 1,400 jobs this year from 1,000.
Hunter Harrison, CP's chief executive officer, said he was pleased with the results "particularly given the soft economic conditions we were faced with."
He said he is sticking with his forecast of "double-digit" profit growth this year as the U.S. and Canadian economies rebound in the second half of this year. "It's a case of if not when," he said. CP posted double-digit declines in freight revenue for five categories of cargo, including crude oil (28 per cent), potash (12 per cent), and metals, minerals and consumer products (16 per cent.) Revenue from hauling forest products rose by 25 per cent and fertilizers increased by 14 per cent.
"CP's volume growth has been stunted by the global commodity recession, given its intermodal [container] volume exposure, at 37 per cent, is the lowest relative to its peers," said Lee Klaskow, a Bloomberg Intelligence analyst. "Meaningful growth beyond 2016 will be challenging without a recovery in commodity demand."
CP's share price has fallen by 20 per cent in the past 12 months amid a broad sell-off of transportation stocks. The share price has risen by 8 per cent since the takeover was called off last week, in anticipation the company would repurchase its shares.
CP cancelled a share buyback program last fall to focus on the $28-billion takeover of Norfolk Southern. But CP last week abandoned the attempt to become a coast-to-coast railway, faced with stiff opposition from the U.S. Department of Justice, a long list of rail customers, and Norfolk Southern itself.
Mr. Harrison repeated his view rail consolidation is the inevitable solution to the congestion and lack of new infrastructure the industry faces. "This is not going away. People will come to their senses," Mr. Harrison said. "I'm not worried about my legacy. I'm much more about creating shareholder value. But I would predict it's going to happen and it will work very well."
The cancellation of the takeover bid prompted Steve Hansen, a stock analyst with Raymond James, to raise his share-price target to $210. He said CP's move ends the uncertainty that prompted a share-price discount to that of Canadian National Railway Co.
Share repurchases signal a company's board believes the stock price is under-valued, and can boost per-share earnings by reducing the amount of stock outstanding.

The latter an unexpected surprise when the incoming London engines P1 class Mikados 5118-5214 were found to require extensive work Lambton roundhouse was unable to perform in time. Instead two old passenger engines G1 and G3 class Pacifics 2214-2332 were dispatched to Streetsville to take over from the two lighter branchline Ten-Wheelers 1098-1092 arriving back from Orangeville. This photo was taken by R.L. Kennedy.
CP FA1 4026, FA2 4086 and an RS3 and RS10, sit on the ready tracks at the St-Luc Diesel Shop awaiting their next call to duty. All are in the matching maroon and grey script livery in this mid 1970's shot when CP RAIL was still new. This shot is a real treat for any fans of the Alco 244 engine! (Neil Compton photo):
OUR CRO MAY COVER SHOT: Ron Visockis photographed this interesting scene back in 1972 at Calgary's Alyth Yard. Equipped to lead CP trains, B&LE 725 is one of several Bessemer & Lake Erie (A and B) F-units that CP was leasing at the time. Passenger geep CP GP9 8510, and a freshly painted CP Rail H16-44 8722 are also in his fine shot taken May 21st, 1972. If you look closely, you will find a (Bangor and Aroostook) BAR GP-7, a B&LE F7A, a CP GP9, and a CP FM H-16-44, each one in a different railroad paint scheme!
Back in July 1972, several US trains detoured over Canadian Pacific Railway when Erie Lackawanna railroad trackage was heavily damaged by Hurricane Agnes in the USA. Here we have an Erie Lackawanna detour over CP's Belleville Sub with all E-L power: SD45 803 (one of the three SD45 demos that later went to the D&H) leading a GP35, F7B and trailing GP35 westbound through Bowmanville, ON July 5th, 1972. The E-L were well know for the electric locomotive consist mixing builders and models! (Doug Hately photo).
Ron Visockis took this great shot of The Canadian at Sheppard, Alberta on June 2nd, 1976, Back to back CP Rail FP9A's lead a silver painted CC&F-built baggage leading the Budd-built stainless steel consist.
Two of the RS3M chop nosed CP Rail Alco's taken by Bill Grandin in St-Luc Yard August 5th, 1980. These were primarily used in Hump service paired with a standard RS3. The low nose offered the engineer better visibility during back up moves inside the yard. At that time, the majority of MLW fans hated their ugly chopped short hood, today we would relish getting a chance to see them again, chugging away in the CP yards in Montreal Toronto and Winnipeg!
John Young shot CP RS18u 1825-1808-1803 stops at Trois Rivieres 1994
John also shot CP RS-18u 1826 with an Action Yellow painted CP Rail van in Trois Rivieres, Quebec in 1993.
It was rare for the Ogden Yard Shop Switcher (CP SW900 6711), to depart from
the diesel shop area, and be visible for railfans to photograph. However on
Nov 8th, 2011, Cor van Steenis clicked this fine roster shot in the yard.
She was the last SW900 on the CP locomotive roster, and was well maintained
as can be seen. There were 11 built in 1955; and ten SW8's built earlier.
All the SW900's have become private industrial switchers or have been
converted to CPR slugs. When the Ogden shop closed and the yard ceased
operations (other than for the steam program and the transloading
facilities), the switcher was placed into storage at Alyth Yard. She
remains on the roster but stored serviceable
Former Ottawa Central, nee CP Rail, SFEX C424 4204 (still in ERS lettering), was shot on November 3rd, 2011, soon after it was pulled from the CN Woodcrest storage line, and prepared for shipping (via CN) with SFEX reporting marks.
