MODEL WORK of SYLVAIN D BOEC
When I learned of the fantastic prototype modeling of Montreal's Central Station on Sylvain's the Bonaventure et Chambly Model Railroad I was very excited to meet and chat with him. His layout has lots of Urban scenery based on Wellington Street in Griffintown (located south of Downtown Montreal) where the railway Viaduct to Central Station is located .

MODELLING FROM THE PROTOTYPE
THE 1971 CN DISPLAY TRAIN
To serve as a Canadian National Railway marketing and promotion vehicle, in September 1970, the CN Pointe St-Charles Shop painted four of their rail cars with billboards (on one side only), to showcase the types of varied loads the railroad transports for their customers. The effort was intended to showcase CN as an innovative developer of resources in the Canadian economy. Photos of these cars were used in CN's sales brochures as marketing tool. The opposite sides of the freight cars were painted in the standard 1970-era CN noodle livery. Obviously, these specially painted railcars were highly sought by rail fans all wishing to be lucky enough to catch each one, which was made more difficult because only one side had the billboard! Leading the unique rail car consist CN assigned an immaculate MLW 6-axle (CN M636 2335) along with brand new PSC-built caboose (CN 79460) bring up the rear.
The train was posed to the public in Belleville, ON (as well as for CN employees in Montreal and Toronto). Derek Henderson photographed CN M636 2335 and the four freight cars and new CN caboose on display at Belleville, Ontario on July 3rd, 1971. The date coincided with the countdown to the retirement of CNR 6218 (a 4-8-4 Northern) which was running her final excursions during July 3rd and 4th 1971 to Anson. It is interesting to note that all the cars stayed painted this way until retired and scrapped in the 1980's and 1990's (None were saved). Derek's photo shows the CN locomotive, the four cars, and tail end CN van displayed in Bellville. ON.
The very colourful chemical covered hopper (CN 370708) was built in 1966 and was especially liked by rail fans as it looked almost like a roll of Lifesavers candies! Two bad it was only painted like this on one side. Earl Minnis shot the car in regular freight service in Amherstburg, Ontario back on June 8th, 1972. For those interested the chemical formula depicted on the car is hexamethylene di-isocyanate, and yes, I had to Google it!
The very eye-catching art work on the CN 50-foot newsprint car (CN 401527) depicted Canada's premier newspapers from most major cities in the country. The lettering was two feet high and really stood out! The car was a cushion under frame 50-plug door newsprint car built in 1966, of which CN and CP had in their fleets in abundance.
The oldest of the display cars was CN 283032, an insulated 50-foot box car built by National Steel Car back in April 1965, It sported a bright red apple.
The newest of the quartet was CN 235091, a two year old 50-foot Mechanical Refrigerator (with the large plug door), built in August 1969, Inside this car was equipped with meat supporting rails and had the latest refrigeration system available. It was painted in a colourful rendering of the different cuts of meat on beef cattle.
