LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hello,

Seeing there was discussion about the train consist of the CRHA Terminals excursion of 1970, I've included several images of the event.  I'm sure that the late Jack Beatty who was with the CP passenger department selected the train consist, and possibly helped plan the route. It was a great trip, and we got to go to places likely no other passenger train went before or since, such as the Lasalle loop.

The train backed as close as possible to Place Viger hotel and station on the Montreal docks. The docks image shows many of the old port facilities, including a large ornate brick warehouse.  The Montreal skyline of the day is just visible in the far background. My notations on the second image just say near mile end. There's a signal bridge visible and some yard trackage as the train is heads north from the docks.

 Cheers,  Phil Mason

 Here Will,

Some oldies for your October issue of CRO:

CNR 4-6-4T #49 at Turcot, Montreal. September 5, 1954. This Montreal Commuter engine is now preserved at EXPORAIL in St-Constant, QC.

G-3g CPR 4-6-2 #2398 sits on the Ottawa West Shop Track on July 4th, 1950. The G-3-f, G-3-g, G-3-h and G-3-j sub-classes which were produced between 1940 and 1948. Sometimes called "Bowen" Class Pacific's, these models will recreate the original design of Henry Bowen, the last steam-era Mechanical Chief for the CPR. Streamlined cabs and running boards, 75"drivers, etc, are all common to many of the Bowen locomotives such as the CPR Hudson's and Jubilee's. All of the models in this run will be coal versions and will be finished in the appropriate paint and lettering to represent the 1950s era. (L.B. Chapman Collection)

Olde Time Trains

Bayview Junction - Hamilton Ontario

Sometimes it takes more than one picture to tell a story. On a fine early September morning from Hamilton's York Road bridge, trains from Canada's two competitive railways pass each other, both grinding their way upgrade on the Niagara Escarpment. The CN Westbound appeared first, two big GE units will have no problem tackling the 10 mile grade to Copetown. CP has a steeper grade with many curves up through Waterdown, today the Kinnear Yard power provides helpers for a push up the hill.

Some additional images from about 30 years ago, before Bayview Junction was expanded to include former junction Hamilton West.

Hamilton West 1985 Apr VIA 6905 Dave Howard:     Times have certainly changed the view looking towards Hamilton West. With the minimal vegetation thanks to railway control programs and dropped leaves over the Winter, you can clearly see the CP railway bridge as it crosses over the CN Dundas Sub in the background, just past the twin Highway 403 bridges. The CN maintenance building on the left has been removed, with new light coloured limestone ballast is in use, years before the now common black slag. The Westbound Hamilton West CTC signals are still in place, now removed with the extension of Bayview Junction westward. All the MLW LRC locomotives have been retired from the VIA fleet, though the original "Tempo" coaches survive.

Hamilton West 1986 Feb CN 9500s Dave Howard:Before the days of big six axle GMD and even more GE locomotives, GMD 4 axle GP40-2L Wide Cab units were the general rule on the CN. At only 3000 H.P. each (compared to the typical 4400 H.P. today) these units had no problems handling the shorter trains up the Copetown hill, and a switcher returning from maintenance at MacMillan Yard. CN has simplified the paint scheme of their fleet, the diagonal white zebra stripes replaced by basic black with a large CN logo and web address at least ending in .ca. Even the maintenance-of-way vehicles are now painted standard white, no longer a custom orange. Note the track-maintenance car (Speeder) just off of the right mainline before the Highway 403 bridge, these have now been replaced by while pickup trucks with mounted railway wheels.

Enjoy, Dave Howard

FROM THE EDITOR

Hello Friends,

Well September has come and gone and the leaves are now changing. This is the best time to shoot trains.  Let's all get out there!   Check out this great photo by Matt Landry with the Fall colours in full effect! CN 8945 leads westbound train 406, as they approach the town of Petitcodiac, New Brunswick.  Of all the spots I was at during the Autumn of 2015, this spot best represented what Fall was all about. Look at those colours!

Is this crossing the line modeling-wise?

John Soehner did up an MLW RSD 17 in the CN 1950's paint scheme with a chopped nose. Using the *American) Broadway RSD015 HO model he transformed into an RSD-17.  Now the one and only RSD-17 demonstrated on the CNR in the 1950's as CNR 3899 and the engine was a high hood.  Any way, he used his modeling license to create a nice looking What If!

Do you have a GREAT VIGNETTE PHOTO?

As our Vignette segments are very popular with our readers, please continue to submit railroad photos from the past, and send along suggestions for future Vignette subjects, and ideas for CRO Special Reports.
