MODEL WORK of RON VISOCKIS
Ron's HO Scale RS10 (VIA 8558), was created many years ago long before scale models of MLW RS10's were available on the market. He used the crude AHM RS11 model as a starting point, kit bashed it, added CN/MLW detailing. Then painted and weathered it to match his photos of the prototype. As the AHM drives were terrible, Ron's unit is a dummy and mated with a motorized VIA F9B, or other passenger power.
His model is based on the one of a kind prototype, a former CP RAIL RS18 (CP 8558), that VIA acquired as a replacement locomotive after CP wrecked one of the VIA units.
MODEL WORK of MARCUS SUREMAN
In the beginning of my model railroad kit bashing days, I stumbled over a picture of a Wisconsin Central GP40 which was constructed out of parts of virtually every railroad existed during that time (at least BN, SBD/CSX/ and WC). That would be a great kit bashing project, but I set it aside back then, because I thought, it would be too complicated for me to build this locomotive. Some weeks ago, I stumbled again over this picture, but this time the decision was made to build not only the WC #3008 but as well both variants of the WC 3018 (renumbered 3008). So I ordered 3 undecorated N-Scale GP40 shells from Atlas and start my project. And here is the result. A real Franken Geep that always attracts attention on my layout! Here is the prototype for WC 3018: http://tinyurl.com/jbxdgmq
By 1995 the WC had assembled quite a group of experienced craftsmen at North Fond du Lac Diesel. Always on the lookout for ways to upgrade the power on the system, WC had bought three ex CSX GP40's that had definitely seen better days. After quite a bit of shop time this former Seaboard System wreck was made whole and operational. In this photo it is ready to depart Shops for a full WC paint job at the WSOR in Horicon. It would be renumbered in the process and emerge as WC 3018. It is quite the kit bash incorporating parts from the original unit plus many parts from wrecked WC 3015 along with a BN cab and short hood via VMV. This photo was taken on March 24th, 1995 by Chuck Schwesinger at the WC Shop in Fonds-du-Lac Wisconsin.

MODELLING FROM THE PROTOTYPE
CN GMD 15 Years Anniversary Locomotives
For their celebration at 15 years as independent company CN painted several GE C40-8's and two GMD units in a special paint scheme. In the fall of 2010, one of those GP38-2 7505 looks very sharp wearing the 15-years paint scheme following frame repair and Hump modifications at Transcona Shop. At this time it was temporarily used as a shop switcher prior to going back into hump service. Ian Campbell shot the only two GMD units (GP9RM 7258 and GP38-2 7505) wearing this logo on the CN roster.
CN C40-8 2112 in CN 15 years Anniversary paint
This great model of CN C40-8 2112 was done by Peter and Merseburg and Sandra Ludwig Merseburg. 35 of these GE locomotives were purchased by CN from UP in 2010 CN 2100-2134 were all former CNW C40-8's, and most were painted and prepared for service at the Centralia Illinois Shops. As this purchase coincided with the 15th anniversary of CN from a government owned Crown Corporation into a private company several C40-8's, a GP9RM and one GP38-2 following shopping were repainted with this "15 years the journey continues" anniversary logo. One side of unit has the logo in English and French on the other.
Detailing and painting a Dash 8-40C into the CN "15 years Anniversary" image was a fun project. This model began as an Atlas C40-8, and we equipped it with DCC (Digitrax) (with light function, Cab Light, Head Light and Ditch lights).
Here C40-8 2112 is about to meet CN GP38-2 7505 in the same paint scheme! We used lacquered paint with the colors Tamyia black and created CN Safety Orange by mixing colours to match the prototype CN red, and the decals are by Microscale, and Highball Graphics. We will be adding more details to complete the model and the images show the model in its current state. Feel free to email William Baird for our email address if you have questions about this model. We will be happy to answer you personally.
CNR 40-Foot Box still wearing the 1950's Maple Leaf "Serves all Canada" logo (CN 544223) was shot in 1981 likely in captive service for maintenance of way inside MacMillan Yard, or stored. Note she still appears to still have a roof walk, full ladders, and friction bearing trucks.
With two big 6-axle trucks, Heavy Duty well flat CGEX 10000 was shot in Toronto on June 17th, 1980. The wood spacer blocks for the load are still inside the car, and clearly marked DO NOT HUMP.
CN Caboose safely brings up the rear of a CN freight at Concord ON February 3rd, 1979.
Going through some older material lately look at this gem! DWC 403563 shot in Toledo, Ohio on March 13th, 2009. Central Vermont 50-plug Door CVC 402747 Toledo, ohio 4-13-09 (Chad Young)
MODELLING ON A BUDGET
The Budget Modelling Guy
Ladder Overload
This is not my idea but a great one. The plastic sheets available at dollar stores that is used for crafts is perfect for HO ladders. One sheet makes them any length you want and they bend so can be installed on round surfaces. Here are a couple after I cut them and sprayed them silver.
I installed a couple on my scratch built water tower and grain elevator. I am sure you will find other uses for them.
We will have more budget modelling ideas next month or send us yours to The Budget Modeller
Happy Modelling.
