NEW LOCOMOTIVE CONVERSION:  On August 10th, GE Building no. 60 had a crew testing Florida East Coast (FEC) ES44C4 802.  FEC 802 has been at GETS, in Erie, PA since January 2016, undergoing conversion to run on diesel and natural gas. (Note the FEC FUEL TENDER for LNG as well. The only one built so far.)  The biggest spotting feature is the new box structure over the old exhaust stack which redirects the flow of exhaust emissions.  Also there is a small pipe for when the unit will run on natural gas. This conversion still needs fine tuning before it can be cleared for service. The black residue seen on either side of the structure was carbon build up from an earlier failed test.  (Stephan M. Koenig)

GE VIGNETTES

Who remembers these running on Conrail and the Monongahela?   GE 2002 was a rebuilt SUPER 7 Demonstrator seen here at Moline Ohio on May 21st 1989. The model was not well received and GE soon dumped the program.

GMD LONDON VIGNETTES

Not a quality photo, but interesting regardless; ONT FP7A 1517 wearing the then new Ontario Northland (Resourceful Railroad) paint scheme, was shot by Jim Parker surrounded by other GMD-built CN motive power at Toronto Diesel shop on a miserable gray day, in June 1967.

The member of the  engine crew poses with ONT FP7A 1512.  (J. Parker Collection - Date, location unknown).

In May 1965, Jim Parker shot the "Northlander" assigned power, ONT FP7A 1511 and Steam Generator equipped ONT RS10 1400 in Toronto, ON.

At the CN Spadina Diesel Facility in Toronto back in August 1970, ONT FP7A 1513 stands out amongst the fine assortment of CN motive power on hand on this day; a CN FPA4, a Tempo painted RS10M, and assorted CN RDC Budd cars.

REPAIR AND SERVICE SHOPS

CAD RAILWAY INDUSTRIES - Lachine QC

Inside the shop in August, CSXT F40PHR 9993 is now stripped down to the frame and the complete rebuild process will now begin.

Richard Marchi shot CMQ GP38-2 3812 before her repaint was done, and CP GP38-2 4404 at Cadrail on July 3rd. (See how CMQ 3812 looks now in the report below).

Soon after the locomotive departed Cadrail, at CP St-Luc Yard in Montreal, QC on July 24th, Luc lanthier clicked former AMTRAK / RAILWORLD F40PH-2 locomotive   LTEX 270 (Larry's Truck Electric) still in her old AMT paint scheme that she wore when leased for Montreal Commuter service a few years ago   She had been stored since the lease ended outside at Cadrail in Lachine for two years, but departed Montreal on CP train 119 later on July 27th. Here are shots taken on July 27th  at St-Luc prior to her departure to Toronto.

On August 5th, at the CP St-Luc Diesel Shop in Montreal, QC Luc Lanthier saw the following units repainted AC4400CW 9521 and 9546, as well as LTEX GP38-3M 3814 and 3815.  The first shot shows them still at Cadrail.

The CENTRAL MAINE & QUEBEC RAILWAY

Unveiled their new locomotive Corporate paint scheme On July 29th. (photo by Kevin Burkholder). The Central Maine & Quebec Railway (CMQ) took delivery of its first of eight rebuilt Electro-Motive Division (EMD) GP38-3 locomotive, #3812, in the company's new corporate paint scheme.

The locomotive is a long term lease unit from LTEX, and a New electrical cabinet and a new TMV control system were installed.  As the CRO July Issue went to press, there are four GP35's on their way to AMP-Danville for repairs, intended for CMQ. CADRAIL will convert these GP35's into GP38-3's. The locomotive, originally built as Penn Central GP38 7791 in 1969, received substantial repairs and upgrades at the CAD Railway Industries facility, located in Lachine, Quebec.

The new scheme is designed to pay homage to the CMQ's Canadian Pacific Railway heritage and to establish a new identity for the company, which will eventually adorn the remainder of the locomotive fleet.

John Giles, President and CEO of CMQ says, "These 'new' GP38-3 locomotives have recently undergone a fundamental rebuild and rehabilitation with new but proven, technological and mechanical upgrades. CMQ and FTIA (Fortress Transportation & Infrastructures Investors) will continue to invest and improve our infrastructure and equipment so that we can serve our shippers and customers more effectively and efficiently. These new GP38-3's will provide dependable, economic service to CMQ and its clients for years to come. And, they look pretty darn sharp too!"  CMQ GP38-3 #3812 will be released to general service where the company's four-axle locomotives are typically used and it (or one of the other emerging units in the new scheme) will be on display at the 2016 24th Annual Glory Days of the Railroad Festival in White River Junction, Vermont, on September 10 and 11. CMQ's paint scheme was assisted by CADARIL and by Kevin Burkholder of Steel Wheels Productions.

The Central Maine & Quebec Railway was formed in 2014.  CMQ has dedicated themselves to retain existing and developing new business, while partnering with connecting carriers to optimize routes, offer competitive pricing and superior customer service. CMQ's primary cargo includes forest products, construction materials, chemicals, grain and energy products. CMQ serves the State of Maine and Vermont, as well as the Province of Quebec. (CRO would like to thank Kevin Burkholder, Gaynor Ryan, Cadrail Staff and the CMQ).

CADRAIL continues to do truck swap outs of designated locomotives from the  Canadian Pacific Railway GE-fleet.  Our visits to see the released units at St-Luc Diesel Shop show that they have had Hi-Ad trucks switched to the Steerable trucks, or vice-versa.

CADRAIL (and NRE-Silvis, IL) continue to install Cattron remote control equipment into GP38AC and GP38-2 locomotives for the Canadian Pacific Railway's RCL Program.  Those seen completed at St-Luc Diesel wear new paint and have all new antennas and strobe lights, and visible Remote Control modifications.

CADRAIL 2001, which is former CP 8024 (an MLW-built RS-23), was damaged in January 2015 and is still unserviceable.

ONTARIO NORTHLAND RAILWAY SHOP - North Bay ON

Patrick McKie shot RLK GP40-2LW 3029 sitting outside the Sudbury shop on  August 7th, 2016 waiting for a traction motor change-out.

Ontario Northland Railway has been awarded a contract for additional Rocky Mountaineer Cars.  The engineering firm CANARAIL continues to refurbish luxury passenger-rail cars for the Rocky Mountaineer tourist train. Since 2014, CANARAIL has delivered five refurbished cars to Rocky Mountaineer. The new contract will enable CANARAIL to deliver 11 additional cars over the next four years, according to an Ontario Northland press release. The work will result initially in 50 new jobs at Ontario Northland's remanufacturing facilities in North Bay, Ontario, and up to 80 new jobs over the contract's term. In less than two years, Ontario Northland's remanufacturing division has expanded from focusing solely on passenger-car refurbishment to securing freight-car, locomotive and wheel repair contracts, Ontario Northland officials said.

After months of hard work by the Ontario Northland Shop staff, the First Refurbished Polar Bear Express coach was completed and released from the shops in mid-August. The ONR provided its staff the opportunity to ride the coach on August 13th 2016 before its voyage home to Cochrane Ontario. Two trips were provided to the staff with 2104 pulling ONT coach 650, APU 203 and ONT 1809. ONT 1809 returned to North Bay days before the event to pull the coach back down from around mile 20 of the Temagami sub.  Unfortunately the weather was not co-operative for photo's with a steady rain falling most of the day but this didn't slow the staff and families down from enjoying this memorable event.
