CAPE BRETON & CENTRAL NOVA SCOTIA RWY
CENTRAL MAINE AND QUEBEC RAILWAY CM&Q is running in daylight to and from Brownville Junction! Harry Gordon caught Red Barn CMQ 9004 arriving off Job 2 on August 24. Harry Gordon photo. Harry reports that, at the moment, both east and westbound jobs can be photographed in daylight on the Moosehead Sub. The new Central Maine and Quebec Railway paint scheme is out, and I am singularly not impressed. The scheme seems to mimic the old FURX/CITX paint on their leasers. Beyond that, it is representative of nothing regional, save the overly small moose in the logo. I had hoped for something better. Here's the FURX/CITX scheme on leaser 3057 at Millinocket, Maine. You decide. Paul Donovan Photo. The Bangor and Aroostook excursion train equipment (some ex-VIA Rail, ex-CN Canadian Car and Foundry cars; one, a round-end observation, ex-Northern Pacific) long stored at Derby Shops in Milo, Maine, is, baring a last minute reprieve, headed for the scrapper. The Bangor (Maine) Daily News reported August 13th that a Pullman-built private brass rail observation car, Belford 99, is also on the chopping block at Derby. The article appears below: http://bangordailynews.com/2016/08/13/living/time-is-running-out-for-historic-railcar-that-carried-us-presidents/The Belford 99 was never a BAR car. It was stored by the owner at Derby Shops and is now in bad shape. The excursion train equipment has been stored by the fence at the front entrance of the shop for many years, with the observation car closest to the gate. Get your photos now! Paul Donovan photos. EASTERN MAINE RWY / MAINE NORTHERN RWY CN's Track Inpsection Budd RDC #1501 travelled the length of Eastern Maine Railway August 24 and 25th. After arriving at Brownville Junction over Central Maine and Quebec Railway on August 23rd, the car departed early on the 24th from BJCT en route to McAdam, NB. 1501 rolls by Lambert Lake, Maine en route to the border at Vanceboro. Paul Donovan Photo.
A few minutes later, 1501 passes the western Route 6 crossing at Vanceboro, Maine. Two photos, Paul Donovan. During a short stop at Vanceboro, Maine, 1501 is seen framed by the U.S. Custom's x-ray machine before it departs for McAdam, NB. Paul Donovan photo. MAINE NORTHERN RAILWAY Not much Maine Northern material this month, so I'll throw in a photo from MM&A days on what is today the Maine Northern Railway. This is a southbound at Oakfield, with one of only two units painted in the Wisconsin Central scheme, followed by two geeps still in BAR paint. Paul Donovan photo.
NEW BRUNSWICK SOUTHERN RAILWAY Unusually warm and dry August weather across New Brunswick and Maine has presented a sight I more closely associate with the American South: Locomotives running with many of the hood doors open to reduce the propensity to overheat, or open to try to restart units that have already failed. Here's the westbound from Saint John crossing the Oromocto River at Fredericton Junction on August 10. East of Fredericton Junction, NBSR runs in a park-like setting, complete with benches. August 10, 2016. Paul Donovan Photo. A few minutes later, the westbound hits the crossing of Provincial route 645 at Vespra, NB.
At Vespra, and beginning to climb the grade out of Fredericton Junction heading towards Harvey, lots of bells ringing on the lead units, including the second, GMTX 203. NBSR 6318 seemed to be the only unit not struggling. A pacing shot of HLCX 6304, courtesy of Harry Gordon's driving. Paul Donovan photo.
At Cork Station the train seems to be getting its feet again. Paul Donovan photo.
Lead unit HLCX 6304 was also struggling, judging by the open doors. The grade behind them, the eastbound glides through Cork Station, NB en route to Harvey and then McAdam. Paul Donovan photo. The CN 1501 track inspection RDC arrives at McAdam, NB on August 24th, 2016. Both photos, Paul Donovan.
The Budd-built CN RDC didn't have that familiar "burble" I remember so well of Budd cars I rode on CN, B&M, New Haven and Reading. I suspect the car has modern diesel engines and has been muffled. I could barely hear the car as it approached, though it has a pretty healthy set of horns! A pretty amazing piece of machinery, considering it is probably 50-60 years old. After a short stop at McAdam, Harry Gordon reported the car operated without testing down the Saint Stephen Branch and overnighted at Saint Stephen, NB. It was scheduled to return while testing to McAdam on August 25th and then continue on to Saint John, NB. In the late 50's and early 60's, CPR Dayliners, as the railroad called their Budd RDC's, operated out of McAdam, covering the run on the now abandoned line to Edmundston, NB. Occasionally, I would see Dominion Atlantic Dayliners deadheading somewhere on the Atlantic Limited, probably to and from the shops in Montreal. How ironic to once again see a Budd Dayliner at McAdam again. I was unable to determine if Dayliners ever operated on the Saint Stephen Branch. Can anyone help on this? Special thanks to Harry Gordon for his photos and tireless pursuit of information. If you have any information or photos on the Eastern Regionals, I can be contacted at cdonovan32@aol.com. CASO SUB VIGNETTES: Chessie System in Canada! (By Geoff Elliott) By April of 1988, CSX had been renumbering locomotives at a record pace. The GP40's in the 40xx series and GP40-2's in the 41xx to 4447 series were now in the 68xx and 60xx to 63xx series. That was just the start of the elimination of C&O/B&O/WM/Chessie by CSX. In time the yellow, vermilion and blue would give way to grey and blue, ironically the colors of the civil war - foreboding maybe? Anyway, there was still time in my photography infancy to still catch some Chessie before it all disappeared. In the first photograph, the train is rolling under the College Avenue and Essex Terminal Railway bridges. From this view, you can see that there was a reason we called CSX train #R321 the "bomb train" - with all those tanks of LPG, Anhydrous Ammonia, Sulphuric Acid, and other not to be mentioned chemicals that originated in Sarnia for customers in the U.S. In the second photo, CSXT #6841 is about to enter into the darkness of the westbound tube. When he emerges into daylight again they will have traveled under the Detroit River into Detroit, Michigan, USA - emerging next to the old Michigan Central Depot. From there they will make their way to their final destination of the C&O Rougemere Yard in Dearborn, Michigan where the Canadian crew will book rest and likely sleep it off before being called to take R320 back to St. Thomas the next morning. The Canada Southern Railway (CASO), was a railway in southwestern Ontario, Canada, founded on February 28, 1868 as the Erie and Niagara Extension Railway. It adopted the Canada Southern Railway name on December 24, 1869. The railway was leased to the Michigan Central Railroad (MCR) for 99 years; in 1929 it was subleased to the New York Central Railroad (NYC). Its successors Penn Central (formed 1968) and Conrail (formed 1976) later exercised control before being sold to CN/CP in 1985. On April 30, 1985, the Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway jointly purchased the former CASO from Conrail in order to acquire the Michigan Central Railway Tunnel under the Detroit River and the Michigan Central Railway Bridge at Niagara Falls. Most of the CASO has been downgraded, abandoned or removed by CN and CP over the years. Operations through Niagara Falls (and over the MCRR bridge) were discontinued with that portion of the line through the city removed in 2001. Unlike the rest of the line however, the Detroit River tunnel is a key part of freight movements across the Canada-US border and still sees a good number of mainline trains. CP and CN both feared Competition from this southern main line and cooperated in the removal of most of the Mainline trackage. CANDO RAIL SERVICES CANDO 4009 was spotted in the CP Quebec Street yard on Aug 18 2016. It was on its way to Lampton Diesel for service any maybe new paint.

On August 19th GEXR 3030 blew a turbo and did its best job to impersonate a steam engine. Here we see it in the Stratford GEXR yards they seem to be hiding in the smoke. Stratford Ontario Aug 19 2016. Heading down the a yard you would think they were under steam power. :-) August 10th GEXR 2303 headed down the Exter sub from Clinton with two cars. Hot day and 18 miles riding on the point is not something I would like to do. Took 2 hours as speed is only 10 mph. There really are tracks in there. A little photo manipulation and GEXR seesm to be lost as it rolls through farmland on its way to Exeter Ontario Aug 10 2016 LLPX 2236 sitting outside the shop in Goderich Ontario after a tune up. The old CN Station which is now offices can be seen in the background. Aug 10 2016

(Mike Robin) After months of hard work by the Ontario Northland Shop staff, the First Refurbished Polar Bear Express coach was completed and released from the shops in mid-August. The ONR provided its staff the opportunity to ride the coach on August 13th 2016 before its voyage home to Cochrane Ontario. Two trips were provided to the staff with 2104 pulling ONT coach 650, APU 203 and ONT 1809. ONT 1809 returned to North Bay days before the event to pull the coach back down from around mile 20 of the Temagami sub. Unfortunately the weather was not co-operative for photo's with a steady rain falling most of the day but this didn't slow the staff and families down from enjoying this memorable event.
