CP F9B 1900 was released from the National Railway Equipment paint shop June 18th with CPR “Block” lettering, and not in “Script” as we were led to believe. As well, new center porthole windows were installed on both sides (where the louvers had been), and according to our contact at NRE, was done at the request of CP management to better represent her appearance in the 1950’s. This photo by Kenneth J. Larson was taken June 18th at NRE - Silvis IL after her Class A overhaul. The B-unit was released in early July, sent St. Paul MN and then to Calgary, AB. She was delivered to Calgary July 13th on daily CP Train 467, and had been forwarded to CP over BNSF (Sweetgrass, MT - Lethbridge, AB). Plans for her to go to Port Moody, BC and mu with 4106 and 4107 in a celebration of the first train to train at Port Moody in 1871 was cancelled but due to the flooding in Alberta last month. Kenneth J. Larson submitted this photo taken by permission at NRE.
CPR F9B 1900 was photographed in Calgary July 13th arriving on daily CP train 467 sandwiched between two CP units. The same day nearby, CP FP9Au 4106 and 4107 were sitting at the ramps just west of the Alyth Diesel Shop. Cor van Steenis submitted these shots he took on August 23rd at the Alyth Diesel S0hop.
Their first assignment as a trio with the repainted B-unit was this Royal Canadian Pacific junket to Crowsnest Pass on July 26th. Cor van Steenis photographed the Royal Canadian Pacific at several locations, in classic A-B-A with CP 4107, 1900 and 4106. The train departed Calgary in the morning of July 26th, for Crowsnest Pass via Lethbridge and Fort MacLeod and the photos below are posted in order, taken at locations indicated all shot July 26th. During the Royal Canadian Pacific's journey August 26th from Golden, BC to what was supposed to be all the way to Field, the engineer on the Mountain Sub reported CP 4107 was not loading. As well CP 1900 wasn't running for the majority of the journey. On his scanner, Mathew Robson overheard the engineer say the rebuilt controls were "something they've never seen before." This made CP 4106 the sole powered unit attempting to tackle the big hill out of Calgary. Needless to say, they stalled on the hill, and had to back up into Field. CP sent GE 9715 to the rescueand after returning to Field at 3:00pm, they didn't depart again until Midnight.
The RCP is seen at the north switch of Manchester Yard, just south of the 12th Street tower in Calgary, AB.

In mid-March, Canadian National Railway sold two cars from their executive fleet to Canadian Pacific Railway and were numbered CP 1 and CP 2. The pair Track inspection theater car CN 1060 “Sanford Fleming” ( “CP2”), and CN heavyweight platform observation car 1058 (“CP1”) have been repainted CP Candy Apple Red, with white trim white with and a black roof and undercarriage at Quality Rail in East St. Louis, IL. They are now both in Calgary. George Redmond caught the pair in transit. Photo by George Redmond.
David W. Brandenburg found (former WC) CP #3 resting on the RIP track at CP-South Edmonton, AB on July 12th with a fluttering yellow safety tape can be seen on the observation car. Damage to the observation end of CP#3 was evident on July 12, 2013 at Edmonton, AB, after the car was hit by eight tank cars in a switching move in Edmonton. The car is still in Edmonton and may still be repaired and is intended to be donated to a museum in Wainwright, AB. She is still in her Wisconsin Central uniform.
In July CP retired their only two gensets (CP 2100 and 2101), and the loco s will soon be returned to National Railway Equipment (NRE). The pair are in full Canadian Pacific paint and had been testing in Ontario on long term lease, partially paid for by the Government of Ontario’s green initiative programs. They are to move to from Toronto to Chicago, and as soon as they are transferred off CP property they are to be relettered “NREX”. (Photo by Bill Sanderson).
In late-May, the following CN locomotive models were repaying Horse Power hours to CP: One SD70I, and five SD75I’s which were used system wide. Two of them were used together in transfer service in Winnipeg, MB, CN 5766 was seen on the CP in Buffalo, NY, and another was a trailing power on a CP Ethanol train passing through Montreal heading down the D&H the last of May. Most had been returned in June, CN SD75I 5705 was still working on at press time.
Ex-CP SW1200RS 1271 which was sold to NRE Silvis earlier this year, has been resold to EMD’s lease fleet, and is now lettered GMTX 509.

Alyth Shop Dead-Line in July:
At the Alyth Shop on July 23rd. Cameron Lochli noted a group of stored SOO painted SD60’s but could not get the numbers as they were behind a long string of 20 dead AC4400CW's from CP's first order 9500~9582.
Notable units seen in service but not running Alyth Shop the same day were: SOO GP38-2’s 4420, 4429, 4406, 4407, 4506, 4507, and 4426 all wearing in various SOO/CP paint schemes, two in their original SOO white paint.

Interested parties can contact CP ASSETT DISPOSAL (www.cpr.ca) and then submit a formal letter.
Richard Marchi snapped these stored and capped CADRAIL overhauled CP SD60M SD60’s at St-Luc on july7th.
At this time CAD Railway Services (Lachine, QC) is still contracted to overhaul the remaining units they have on their property to Tier 0+ compliance, equip them with AESS (Locomotive Automatic Engine Start/Stop) to conserve fuel, and to repaint and renumber them to the CP 6200-series. None received any cab upgrades. The rebuilt units receive (PTC) Positive Train Control modifications at the CP St-Luc Diesel Shop. However things could change as these units are now for sale.

All 30 GP20C-ECO units (nos. 2200 -2229) from their first order from EMD’s Muncie, IN plant had been delivered, and were in service assigned to St-Paul, MN. CP 2219 was tested at EMD in June and got a real go-over. There are two exceptions. In May, CP 2200 and 2212 were reassigned from (SOO territory) St. Paul, Minnesota, to CP in Medicine Hat, Alberta. This is the last CP crew change location before Calgary, AB, and these are the first two GP20ECO’s to operate in local service in Canada. Then in last June CP 2212 was sent to Ontario and was assigned to the Galt Sub on a Ribbon Rail unloading train.

CP’s “Summer of Hell” continued in June. Small boxes and packages of food floated along the Wahnapitae River, occasionally washing up on shore, after a rail trestle collapsed into the water taking with it five freight cars on June 2nd. The derailment happened off Highway 537 near Sudbury, ON. One rail car was submerged in water, its red roof barely visible under the rushing current but no injuries were reported. Several area residents said the portion of the bridge that collapsed had work done on it over the past few years. Highway 537 was closed for several hours after the derailment, reopening at 3:00PM. Ed Greenberg a CP spokesman, said “The train derailed at 8:00AM. We had crews respond to the scene and have been working closely with local first responders in terms of ensuring that the appropriate measures are being taken to keep the site safe and secure and to continue assessing how many rail cars did breach water,” Greenberg said that evening. The cars, he added, were carrying consumer goods. “Transportation Safety Board of Canada investigators arrived and are looking into the incident,” said spokesman Chris Krepski. This is the second derailment in less than two years in that area. In October 2011, six of 91 cars on a CP freight train derailed.

On June 4th, crews connecting tracks from the CN Bala Sub at MP 256.8 to the OVR / CP Cartier Sub CP trains will run north and south on CN Bala Sub between St Cloud ( near derailment ) and diamond with “ new connecting tracks “ at MP 256.8, where they will take the Cartier Sub to and from Sudbury it should be in operation in days. Then, onJune 19th, the bridge at Wanup had been replaced and CP traffic was again back to normal routing. Canadian Pacific Railway says it did everything possible to inspect a Calgary bridge that failed early Thursday morning, leaving six derailed cars stranded on the sagging track. The company said floodwaters caused the Bonnybrook rail bridge to buckle. “Despite numerous, vigilant and beyond regulatory inspections of the bridge, one of the four piers which support it experienced scouring,” said spokesman Mark Seland. A frustrated Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi lashed out this morning. "Let me be blunt," the mayor said. "A lot of people have lost their jobs at CP Rail the past year. How many bridge inspectors were let go? Seland denied later in the day that CP had any fewer inspectors on the job. “CP today has the same safety policies, practices, and especially inspection personnel that it had last year and even five years ago,” said Seland. He said the scouring occurred at the very bottom of the pier, where the inspectors could not see it. - Calgary's Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant releases sewage into Bow River. - Flood cost will top $1B but Alberta GDP will rebound fast, TD said.
In mid-June raging floodwaters throughout southern Alberta claimed both of CP’s mainline routes, leaving the Canadian Pacific Railway scrambling to keep trains moving. Heavy rainfall over the Oldman and Bow river basins caused devastating floods throughout much of southwestern Alberta early June 20th, scouring away Canadian Pacific lines in Canmore and Crowsnest Pass. The two lines are the railway’s only links to the west coast. According to railway spokesperson Kevin Hrysak, high water conditions have affected Canadian Pacific lines in both locations, with high water scouring railbeds and bridge abutments. Reports indicate that the railbed supporting Canadian Pacific’s Laggan Subdivision, part of the company’s transcontinental main line, is severely abraded or totally washed away at some points through Canmore by Cougar Creek A bridge carrying Canadian Pacific’s Crowsnest Subdivision through Blairmore has been completely washed away, with ties clinging to sagging rails dangling over raging flood waters.
On June 20th the kicking horse line was underwater at Canmore, AB., and a bridge has been washed away along the Crowsnest line. Also, they have placed loaded cylindrical hoppers on the bridge along the Edmonton line in Calgary, where the river was already up to bridge level! As more heavy rain was expected in the flood plain, the Calgary diesel Shop and Alyth Yard were closed. The last brave crews had time to complete pulldown jobs and worked until the water was getting too close. CP began detours of trains south off the mainline at Golden, BC to Fort Steele east over Yellow Head pass , and over the CN main.

Canadian Pacific trains were backed up across Alberta and B.C. as the system is rerouted onto other railways. (Railways have agreements with other railways to accommodate trains in these type of situations). Hrsak confirmed that CP negotiated with other railways in order to ensure continued operation of the railroad. Railway officials have no word on when thesystem will be back up and running although as of June 24th waters were receding in Calgary.
This is the second such incident involving the Canadian Pacific main line. A portion of the main line in northern Ontario remains closed after a derailment caused a bridge to collapse into the Wahnapitae River southeast of Sudbury.
Canadian Pacific website concurred June 22nd its main line west of Calgary through the Banff-Canmore region of Alberta is now open after railway operations crews successfully restored segments impacted by the extreme weather last week. A portion of its track in Calgary is expected to re-open this evening, fully restoring the railway’s main line. A segment of CP’s south line to Lethbridge, Alberta will be fully restored by June 27th. Heavy rainfall and the accelerated snowcap melt in the Rockies over the past several days caused severe flooding and many Southern Alberta communities remain evacuated and under states of emergency including Calgary. While the affected segments of the railway's main line were being fully restored, the railway detoured a number of its trains on the south western part of its network and was assisted by CN and other carriers over the weekend. "Considering the devastating impacts to thousands of people and property that this extreme weather left in its path, I commend the resiliency and dedicated efforts of all our CP railroaders, who safely worked to get our network back in service so quickly," said CP Chief Executive Officer, E. Hunter Harrison, who noted during the four-day period, crews responded to over forty individual locations impacted by high water in both Alberta and the British Columbia interior. "The force and extent of this flooding was extensive and evolved from hour-to-hour. As locations were identified, CP crews responded with equipment and resources and carefully managed to safely and systematically restore each outage," said Harrison. Harrison continued, "Despite the significant recovery efforts and interruption to railway operations, CP maintains its previously provided guidance for 2013."
As of June 24th, the Crow and Laggan Subs were back in service, after serious remedial work in the last few days. Not mentioned and still not in service is the Macleod Sub which runs south from Calgary to Lethbridge, AB, and used primarily to access the U.S. with connections to BNSF and UP. The severe weather conditions took out the south approach to the bridge in Okotoks, AB, and CP have been working ever since to reclaim the rail connection with cars of large rocak and even concrete blocks from a local gravel pit, with the CP line expected to be open by June 28th. Detouring due to severe washouts on CP's Laggan Subdivsion in central Alberta, CP Train 101-17 (running as CN train F40151 21 between East Edmonton, AB and Coho, BC) speeds west at Mile 220.5 on the most scenic part of CN's Edson Subdivision near Jasper, AB. The train consisted of CP ES44AC 8907, AC4400CW 9775, ES44ACs 8711 and 8755 on the headend, followed by 93 intermodal platforms, AC4400CW 9683 mid-train with another 43 intermodal platforms behind that on June 21st. A real rocket traveling on their bosses former turf!
Amongst all the turmoil, in late June Canadian Pacific Railway announced Robert Johnson has been hired as CP's Vice-President U.S. Operations. Mr. Johnson's railroad career spans 32 years with BNSF where he held successively more responsible roles in operations, transportation, engineering, and service excellence. His most recent position at BNSF was General Manager, Northwest Division, overseeing day-to-day operations for that region. Johnson takes over from SVP U.S. Operations Doug McFarlane, who has announced his retirement after 37 years with the railroad in both Canada and the United States. McFarlane joined CP in 1976 and has held a number of positions within the company, including conductor and locomotive engineer. He later served in key executive roles in operations, transportation, marketing & sales and labor relations, and ultimately as SVP U.S. Operations.
In early-June, CP implemented faster intermodal service between Toronto and Calgary, the new service cutting 20 hours off the previous schedule, and offering 64-hour service over the entire 2,100-mile corridor. However, severe flooding in Calgary in late-June obviously through a wrench into the gears.
Canadian Pacific had quite a mess on their hands with washouts near Canmore, Blairmore, Sparwood, Hosmer and Okotoks, AB on various lines with a washout at Mile 27, Macleod Subdivision at Okotoks, AB, where CP crews worked to shore up, ballast and THEN connect up the tracks after the Sheep River overflowed its banks. More details on the damage can be found here:

On July 17th, Norfolk Southern train Q364 derailed at CP 437 in Buffalo and wiped out the interlocking for the most part. Canadian traffic using the NS which uses this interlocking was forced to do several moves in the Buffalo area to avoid the work going on at the location. One such move came today that was absolutely luck of the draw. CP 254 came down from Canada but could not cross over to the NS Howard Runner because the connecting interlocking was still out. So they sent the train out to Forks where the power was run around to the rear and CSX pilots were put on board. The trailing unit was D&H 7404, which happened to have ¾ fuel in its tank and was set to lead, and was facing the right way. I got a call from a good friend of mine totally taking me by surprise as to what was going on. The end result was the picture you see. D&H 7404 had one last opportunity to lead a mainline train before she is rebuild and repainted into CP red at NRE. (Stephen M. Koenig photo).
