CANADIAN RAILWAY HISTORY

FEBRUARY  2012

James A. Brown photographed CNR 6218, steaming into Acton Vale QC, on February 27th, 1971.

St. Lawrence Valley Railway Society "Special"

Robert O’Shaughnessy witnessed a rare occurrence when he photographed CP Rail E8’s 1800 and 1802 placed back to back for a special passenger extra in 1971.  While your Editor was never lucky enough to see this as a boy, apparently the E8’s at times called into Commuter service and in fact were once (maybe twice), assigned back to back.

In September 1971, CP ran a nine car excursion led by the two CP E8’s from Montreal Windsor Station, to Lac Megantic on the Québec Central  and organized by the St-Lawrence Valley Railwau Society.  These historic photos were taken at St-Victor de Beauce and at Black Lake. QC.

ALCO Heritage Museum

The Alco Heritage Museum received an historic artifact in the form of an FA-1 (Ex-RDG #301) locomotive nose and cab which will be fixed up and eventually used in a locomotive simulator so visitors can experience what it is like to operate a large diesel locomotive.  All of the missing locomotive sections will be rebuilt using original exterior elevations printed on vinyl and stretched along each side of a series of bent poles conforming to the lateral contours of the FA-1.. The Schenectady museum is dedicated to showing off products made in the Capital Region of New York State at the site of the former American Locomotive Company.
