LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Memory Lane

On May 1st, 1971, I took CP train #154 (1:30 pm) from Montreal, Windsor Station, to Quebec City to visit my brother Bob for the weekend. The next morning my brother and I when to have a look at the power that brought me to Quebec City. We caught CP E8 1802, one of the only two on the roster at that time. What a beautiful loco, freshly painted, you could still smell the paint!
Both the loco and my brother are gone.

Regarding this CN Vignette photo last month of CN GP35 4000 (Peter Coulombe), and the disposition of CN's only two GP35 locomotives.

Will;

I can confirm that CN GP35 4000 wound up on the DMVW (Dakota Missouri Valley and Western), but was cut up over 10 years ago.  Paul Leach's photo was in 2002 and she was already stripped of parts.

CN GP35 4001 was used as a parts source at Pointe Ste Charles before being cut up during the Eighties.

 Hi

Would you have any contacts from CN Pointe St Charles who might have some experience, recollection, or documentation  on the CN Superintendents' cars rebuilt from the Hawker-Siddeley built CN centre-cupola cabooses?  CN 61200-61202 were built 1976-77, and assigned to Kamloops, Prince George and Edmonton respectively, and given CN passenger-like black & white paint. I have an inquiry from a current owner of one of these unique CN 'business cars'!

Thanks in advance,

Eric Gagnon

 PHOTOSHOP ADVANTAGES

When you take photos of a moving train, you may have surprises when you look at the pictures on your computer screen.

For example this picture of VIA 6451 leaving the Belleville Station the other day.  Compare the original with the photo shopped image,  with the magic of Photoshop or any photo programs, you could do some repairs to make the picture look so much better! Photography today is fun, a few years ago, it would have been much more complicated.

FROM THE EDITOR

Hi All,

Our new Locomotive Shop contacts have really boosted our numbers so we do thank them. (Of course it is best to not reveal their names).  Suffice it to say, we appreciate their news contributions to CRO.

We also have a new guest contributor. Steve Rathke is a Norfolk Southern Engineer who will be editing a new column in SOUTH OF THE BORDER called "At the Throttle".  His column will look at life as an engineer on the Thoroughbred railroad, and US news of interest to CRO Subscribers.

 Some interesting shots this month!

First from Doug Smith, Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) switcher no. 6253 and crew (From Doug's photo collection) .

Hi everyone,

I have been busy going through my slides and so here are some of my shots from the past.

 1. BN 2075 with a business train southbound at Tacoma in 1990.

2. SP 8261 is westbound at Dunsmuir, 1990.

3. BN  9662 westbound on a coal train at West End MT on the MRL. 1996.

On Moorhead, Minnesota on February 22nd , Chris Hennebry shot this  local with a former BN GP38-2B in action.  It's the only cabless GP38-2 on the BNSF roster.  The Burlington Northern converted it to a "B" unit after it was involved in a wreck.

SUBMITTING PHOTOS TO CRO

The size should be no larger than an image width of 1000 pixels.  We can no longer accept over sized photos.  Always include the date, location, train number (if known), and other pertinent information in the photo caption.  Photos and complete captions need to be submitted before the 20th of each to be included in that months issue. If used, VIP Free access to CRO is granted to all who provide their photos and news.

As our vignettes segments are very popular with our readers, please continue to submit railroad photos from the past, and send along suggestions for future Vignette subjects, and ideas for CRO Special Reports.

Our CRO readers are primarily male and made up of railfans in the 21-71 age group living in Canada and the USA.

We have many subscribers who are in the railway industry, railroad management and employees, Locomotive parts and repair shop contacts, railway museum curators and volunteers, Tourist train operators and employees, professional photographers, model train dealers and hobby

Shops.  These individuals are entitled to free VIP CRO access once approved by our CRO management.  Contact me by email.

The mission of CRO is to keep our readers informed of pertinent Canadian locomotive and industry news, which is compiled and verified over the month, and updated as needed.  The accurate information we post each month is obtained and confirmed from our reliable sources. However errors can occur, and we welcome your input in this regard.  I am humble enough to say I do make typos and have inadvertently misspelled a name or misplaced a photo credit.  I will always compensate the photographer and do what is needed to keep all of our contributors happy and satisfied.   CRO is a vehicle to showcase locomotive shots submitted by our readers, credit them, and help promote their photography. We never post photos, without asking the photographer for permission, and once granted, they are given free CRO access for as long as this sharing relationship continues. The same goes for our valued news sources.

 Take care all,
