CN LOCO NEWS PHOTOS

Under a steady light rain on a dreary March 124th, 2016 St Albans-Montreal Canadian National train #323 is crossing the 3,800-foot long wood railroad trestle spanning the Missisquoi Bay in northern Vermont. It is located at East Alburg, Vermont, on the New England Central Swanton Subdivision. It is very unusual to see CP power on this train especially leading with CP ES44AC 8930!

Ruperto Gutierrez shared this photo from Texas of three brand new Canadian National ET44AC's that are being built at the GE plant in Ft Worth, TX.  CN 3043 and CN 3041 are preparing to head out on a test run. These originaly were to be built at GE's Erie Pennslyvania plant.(via Ruperto Gutierrez).

On March 21st, CN  train 369 experienced an undesired brake application as it was approaching Bath Ontario (between Kingston and Belleville).  On examination the Conductor found the train divided immediately behind the DPU (CN ES44AC 3037) because the coupler head had broken off the drawbar.  The cause of the brake application was a disconnected hose between the first and second cars behind the DPU.  One of our CRO readers Malcolm Peakman was at Napanee Station when the train passed and managed to get the attached picture of the failed coupler. The train also had recently repaired CN 2191 in the head end power, I noted that the cab has no class information indicated.

CN 2191 was rebuilt and repainted at NRE Silvis, IL following a wreck with WSOR in Wisconsin, CN C40-8W 2191 looks great on January 25th, 2016 as she waits her next assignment on the Toronto MacMillan Yard shop track.

CN SD70M-2 8863 taken by Mike Garza at Homewood, IL on February 20th, 2016.

IC GP38-2 9573 was released for pick up from NRE in Dixmoor, IL following repairs and complete repaint.

IC SD70 1029 has new style CN number boards shot at Homewood, IL in early March.

CN SD40-2W 5328 was freshly painted and photographed outside in the sun at the Woodcrest Shop on March 4th, 2016.

On March 8th, Mike shot BCOL C40-8Mu 4622 after a thorough wash and has new trucks and wheel sets at Homewood, IL March 8th.

On March 11th, EJ&E 667 was looking good at the shop at Homewood, IL.

CN SD75I's are well liked by CN crews that we have spoken with.  On March 11th, Walter Pfefferle snapped four GMD SD75I's which headed up two trains that met in Woodstock, Ontario.  CN 5744 CN 5794 and CN 8863 were first on an eastbound and then were met by CN 5774 and CN 5757 on a westbound at the Woodstock VIA Station.

CN train Q116 is getting ready to double up at Homewood, IL on February 18th (Mike Garza).

Mike shot the CN geometry train with CN SD40-2 5386, about to depart Homewood, IL  on February 18th.

From the viewing platform at Homewood, CN SD70M-2 8908 was leading a train with a pair of CSX units destined to Kirk Yard in Late February.

In March, GMTX 2668 lifting two units (one CN, one CSX)  to NRE in Dixmoor, IL for repairs.

Billy Hammond III caught  the one and only IC SD70 with the CN Noodle on the rear end.  IC SD70 1022 was shot on January 17th 2016  at Benton,  IL

One BC RAIL painted unit still looks great following a reapplication of safety striping along  the frame and the steps at the Woodcrest Shop.  After complete wash, BCOL 4643 heads southbound from Chicago on February 27th, with her BC Rail paint still holding up.

CN Survivors! On March 2nd, Michael Berry clicked CN train 500 with double GP9's and double stacks on the wharf at the Port of Montreal. The CN transfer has GP9RM's (CN 7204 and CN 7246, both very clean and in the current CN paint scheme), with a long string of well cars, with double stacks, single stacks and some empties. The train is crossing over the eastern end of the Lachine canal and passing the eastern edge of grain elevator #5 .

On March 6th, 2016 Andy Cassidy was at the BNSF Terminal in New Westminster, BC shooting the two Rocky Mountaineer coaches sitting in the BNSF Old Yard on track 10 at the terminal, Mile 145 on the CN New Westminster Sub. The question on what was happening with the coaches was answered by Ian Smith of the CRHA Pacific Coast Division, as follows, "The Rocky Mountaineer cars are on their way to California for conversion to Silver Leaf specifications. The work is being done by Alstom at its factory on Mare Island in Vallejo, formerly a military facility."  So thanks Ian and back to this set then. As luck would have it, a CN train that had been waiting over at Brunette (due to a previous Northbound movement when I first got there), started heading South to the Fraser RiverBridge. So I was able to get a handful of shots of him, plus a few of the cars in tow. CN 2415-2442 (GE Dash 8-40CM's) were doing yeoman's work here.

Again, all this with the little 3 mega pixel Minolta. It does a decent job on the action shots, but the autofocus has a mind of its own so a couple of shots are not the sharpest. It also shows its limitations in the going away shots as the sun got blocked by the clouds and it darkened up so the shots are a bit grainy. When I took the shots of the various tank cars at the back of the train the sun had again peeked through.

I like it when I can stop somewhere for a photo set and a train is right on me. In and out quick. Many days though I'm standing around like a dummy waiting for something to happen while the scanner (which I don't have anymore), is squawking away with chatter of things going on all around me at other locations! So in this case I was done in twenty minutes. Good.

Another BC RAIL unit was shot in the east. Francois  Jolin caught  Canadian National #323, at St-Jean, Quebec the St Albans, VT - Montreal, QC daily manifest Canadian National 323, is rounding a tight curve as it passing through the city led by BC RAIL blue dipped BCOL 4653.

A rare catch indeed, Francois Jolin bagged a pair CP units with no CN power  lifting CN Train 529 through  St-Jean, Quebec the morning of February  28th, 2016!

CN ET44AC and ES44AC were sitting at Pt. Robinson, ON Jan 30th 2016 waiting for the crew to get their busy day started.

CN SW1200RS 7304 is getting some sun as she waits patiently at Parkdale Yard in Hamilton on January 30th,  CN 7304 is the steel transfer companies  main power.

Somebody needs a little TLC!   CN C44-9WL's 2501 and 2509 are badly in need of a new paint job as the sit on the inbound shot track at Mac Yard on Jan 30/16

The winter sun is setting on GTW GP38-2 5857 as she waits her turn to enter the Toronto Diesel Shop at MacMillan Yard on Jan 30th 2016.

STORED UNITS 2016

A  poor economy and ever changing traffic levels affecting the amount of activated Motive Power, CN has again increased the number of stored units at their shops in Illinois, Alberta, Ontario, and Tennessee.   CN has approximately 75 locomotives in storage at Centralia. IL, the majority of which are SD60F, SD60, SD40-2W's and Dash 8-40C, and a few IC SD70 models.   Basically it comes down to a poor economy, loosing major contracts to haul goods, or the end of seasonal traffic such as Grain loads.  For these major reasons all Class one railroads must from time-to time store large numbers of locomotives.  CN use the following criteria to choose what locomotive models get stored:  Age of the Locomotive, Reliability, and its Performance.   The model series to be stored gets drained of fluids, the roof stack is covered, to prevent water corrosion, the Batteries are disconnected and sometimes removed, and depending on the storage location, the cab may get locked to prevent vandalism .  As well, with traffic down, in January2016,  CN had approximately 600 people laid off system wide.

Former LMSX C40-8W STATUS:

IC C40-8W 2458, 2461, and 2465 are the only ones painted in CN uniform to date.  IC 2458 and 2461 were painted at the Centralia Shop in Illinois and  IC 2465 was done at the Transcona Shop in Winnipeg.   The other LMSX C40-8W's are wearing (Conrail) blue paint, and are patched IC. After operating on CN and Conrail for many years in a co-leasing arrangement in the 1990's, LMSX 728-736, 738, and 739) eventually had their leases purchased by CN. One is off the roster, IC 2464 was retired in 2012, after being wrecked on the CSX.

 CN (ex-GMTX/ex-EMDX) SD60 STATUS:

CN acquired 90 second-hand EMD / Oakway Leasing  (3,800 hp) SD60 locomotives back in 2012, which were delivered in two purchases:

- CN SD60 5400-5442 (1st group)
- CN SD60 5443-5489 (2nd group).
All are upgraded to CN specifications, repainted into CN colours, and can lead.

However, in late 2015 and still continuing into 2016, a number were  sidelined and remain stored at Centralia, Woodcrest, and elsewhere on the system due to the economic down turn in rail traffic.

HISTORIC BRIDGE BURNS

An historic bridge in the town of Porcupine Plain, Sask., was reduced to embers after it caught fire on Friday, in a spectacular blaze that has been linked to a grass fire that got out of control, according to RCMP.  Crews responded around 3:30 p.m. CST to the fire at the defunct bridge, which was built in 1929.   In a statement Saturday, RCMP said the structure was a total loss.  "A local home owner had set a grass fire that had gone out of control and spread to the bridge," RCMP said. "The blaze was contained and no other structures were damaged."  They said no charges had been laid but added their investigation was still underway.  Murray Althouse, assistant fire chief for the community, said the east portion of the bridge caught fire first and it quickly spread.

TSB REPORT -  CN MAY 24 2015 DERAILMENT FORT FRANCIS

Evidence indicated poor track conditions and maintenance delays led to the May 2014 derailment of a CN train near Fort Frances, Ontario the Transportation Safety Board of Canada announced in mid-March 2016. The train was traveling from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Chicago along the Fort Frances Subdivision when it derailed May 23, 2014, according to a press release of the TSB report.

The train's crew noticed misaligned track ahead and took actions to stop the train. The track near the derailment "was in poor condition with defective ties, fouled ballast and ineffective rail anchoring," according to the agency. The derailment ultimately occurred when the misaligned track buckled under the train.

The agency's investigation also revealed that "CN did not consistently apply its Engineering Track Standards while Transport Canada's (TC) inspection and enforcement activities did not ensure timely maintenance action. Despite CN company maintenance and TC's regulatory inspection activities prior to the accident, the weakened track structure had not been adequately addressed and speed reductions were not applied."

CN concurred with the TSB finding that a combination of factors led to the accident. According to a company statement, the Class I "collaborated extensively" with the TSB's investigation and "seeks to learn from every accident and to continuously strengthen its safety management system in order to reduce main track derailments to an absolute minimum."

The railroad intends to invest in its 2016 capital program a record $2.9 billion (in Canadian dollars), of which $1.5 billion will be spent on track infrastructure, according to the statement.  "The infrastructure work will include the replacement of rail, ties, and other track materials, as well as bridge improvements and targeted branch line upgrades," CN officials said.
CN also noted that the TSB report acknowledged "several key strengths" of CN's safety management system.  (CBC Report).
