EMD/BOMBARDIER - Mexico

New Union Pacific SD70ACe-T4CU locomotives completed at the EMD / Bombardier (Formerly Concarril) locomotive plant in Sahagun. Mexico, are shown factory fresh March 14th, 2016. Hugo Garcia submitted several shots of 4300hp UP SD70ACe-T4CU 9000, 9001, and 9002 in transit on Mexico Valley Terminal Railroad (FTVM) for interchange to KSCM in Mexico City. Picked up by KCSM, they will be delivered up to the USA border crossing in a few days. Already the first group (8900-series), are in the USA arriving March 14th. Mucho Gracias Hugo!

EMD VIGNETTES

One EMD locomotive that was canceled shortly after coming to market was the SD28, a light 6-axle unit built by Electro-Motive Diesel in LaGrange, IL between July 1965 and September 1965. Power was provided by an EMD 567D1 16-cylinder  engine which generated 1,800 horsepower (1.34 MW). This locomotive was basically a non-turbocharged version of the successful SD35.  Only 12 of the SD28 model were ever built, six for US railroads (Columbus and Greenville, RR, and Erie Mining RR) , and a further six of a passenger variant, type SDP28, were built for export to Korea in 1966 for the  Korean National Railways.

Illinois Central Gulf acquired the two Columbus and Greenville SD28's and both got repainted in to IC colors.  IC Sd28 9451 was wrecked beyond repair on 9/29/89, and sold to National Railway Equipment 8/17/92.

GMD LONDON VIGNETTES

Remember when Canadian Pacific Railway was testing out the brand new SD70ACe's?  That was over a decade ago! My how time flies.  (Mark Forseille Port Coquitlam, BC Canada).

GMDX SD70ACe #70 was shot at the CP diesel facility in Coquitlam, BC back in 2005.

Built at GMD London in late 1995, Union Pacific SD90MAC 8001 is seen  in November 1995 after release from the plant waiting to be lifted by GEXR  to CN MacMillan Yard for furtherance to UP in Chicago, IL.   This locomotive was later renumbered to UP 3471, and about two years ago was one of a large group of UP SD90MAC's sold to Norfolk Southern, and is currently  numbered NS 7231.

CAD RAILWAY INDUSTRIES - Lachine QC

One Notable New Arrival in March:

CSXT F40PH-2 9993 (Former AMTK F40PHR 395) has arrived at CADRAIL  for an unknown scope of work.  It came up on CSX Q263 on March 5th, arrived in Buffalo, NY and was sent to Toronto on CP 247 March 6th.   It arrived at Cadrail in Montreal, a few days later.   While it was still in transit on CSX in the USA, Josh Martin snapped CSXT 9993 going westbound heading to Buffalo on Q263 March 3rd, 2016.

CSXT F40-PHR, (is not an F40PH-2), and is from Amtrak EMD Order #847048: Date 08.85 Model F40PHR (AMTK 391-400 series).   It was later rebuilt using components from an SDP40-PH onto a new 4 axle F40 frame.  Several  F40's were rebuilt from retired SDP40 6 axle units. This great shot is by Kevin Wood.

Adam Finger was able to catch two together two years ago.

On March 23rd, CP GP38-2 4511 was shot outside with full RCL equipment. All photo taken by Luc Lanthier.

CP 8630 was shot by the fence without its prime mover.

Luc shot LTEX GP39-3M 3906 and 3903 through the fence in March.

Out of service for over 2 years, VIA P42DC 901 was at Cadrail for complete repaint, however the internal repair work will be completed by VIA at their Montreal Maintenance Center.   You may recall, on March 2nd,2014 VIA P42 #901 was trailing (on the rear end) on Ottawa-bound VIA 57 (which in the new numbering is a Mtl-Ott-Tor run, as opposed to the Mtl-Tor milk run via Cornwall). That locomotive caught fire in the afternoon near Alexandria, causing substantial delays to that train and others between Ottawa and Montreal. Mike Thompson was in the right place at the right time, and captured these dramatic photos of 901 on fire.

CADRAIL continues to do truck swap outs of designated locomotives from the  Canadian Pacific Railway GE-fleet.  Our visits to see the released units at St-Luc Diesel Shop show that they have had Hi-Ad trucks switched to the Steerable trucks, or  vice-versa.

CADRAIL (and NRE-Silvis, IL) continue to install Cattron remote control equipment into GP38AC and GP38-2 locomotives for the Canadian Pacific Railway's RCL Program.  Those seen completed at St-Luc Diesel wear new paint and have all new antennas and strobe lights, and visible Remote Control modifications.

CADRAIL 2001, which is former CP 8024 (an MLW-built RS-23) was damaged in January 2015.  Luc Lantier took these shots two months ago showing the damage to CADRAIL RS23 #2001.   (Luc Lanthier).

In early March, Guy-Pascal Arcouette shot VIA P42DC 901 at Cadrail where it will receive a full repaint. The internal repairs it still needs will be completed afterwards by VIA, at their Montreal Maintenance Center.

ONTARIO NORTHLAND RAILWAY SHOP - North Bay ON

Work on STL&A GP40M-3 (SLR 3804) was completed and released from the Ontario Northland Shop in mid-March.  As we went to press, she was testing on the Ottawa Valley Railway (RLK) on OVR trains 431/430 the last two weeks of March.
