Great Shot! Nicolas Houde photographed CN 529 bringing the heat from down  south with two Kansas City Southern units (KCS 4610 and 4147), along with NS 6923 as it approaches Turcot West on the CN Montreal Subdivision. It's very unusual in Montreal QC, to have a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius on Christmas Eve with no snow on the ground!  All of these mainline tracks will be shortly rebuilt to the left beside the temporary yellow construction offices are located.

Mike Garza photographed the 2015 IC/CN  Santa Train after returning back to the Woodcrest Shop on December 24th.

The brand new CN ET44AC 3024 was leading the Q 116 at Homewood, Illinois on December 17th.

The rear unit the CN 2506 was washed and retrucked was on the Q 116 at Homewood on Dec. 19th.

This car was shot by Mike Garza near the CN Woodcrest car shop tracks.   Pretty nice graffiti art.

On December 15th, one of the four ex-EMD SD70ACe-P6 demonstrators (CN 8101) is paired with CN 2810, and lead CN 331 through Woodstock Ontario.  All four (CN 8100-8103) are active, and in full CN paint.

On December 18th, Kenneth Borg clicked CN #515 Southbound and Long hood forward at Greendale Ave in Detroit, MI with BLE SD40T-4 910 on a cloudy Michigan Day.

A south bound train December 3rd, had the CN/IC Santa train in its consist. Mike Garza took these shots at Olympia Fields, IL the morning of December 3rd.

After sitting wrecked in the Winnipeg deadline for almost six  years, many thought that CN 2695 was surly to be  scrapped.  However CN shop forces at Transcona have rebuilt and have begun completing her. Earlier in 2015 they started on the bare frame, and only worked it when time allowed inside the shop.  Currently she appears as in these photos taken last month, and will be worked on over the next four months in the new year, as there is all ready plenty to do on priority units currently inside  the shop.

CN has increased the number of stored units.  At Woodcrest, IL WC 3021 is a new arrival in the storage line.  CN has approximately 75 locomotives in storage at Centralia. IL, the majority of which are SD60F, SD60, SD40-2W's and Dash 8-40C models.   Christopher Bodkin shot a variety of motive power stored near the turntable at the Centralia Shop October 31st.  CN SD40-2W 5346, CN SD60 5453, IC SD70 1016, and CN SD50 5460.

An unusual font style of CN cab road numbers was shot by Ron Visockis last month.  Built by GE in August 2002, CN C44-9W 2651 was repaired and partially repainted in this unique fashion at the CN's Woodcrest Shop just over a year and half  ago.

Hard to believe this was December 15th with the mild temps and no snow to speak of yet in the Montreal - Toronto corridor! Ron Visockis snapped CN ET44AC 3000-3021 on #149 at Belleville, ON Dec 15th.

CN C40-8W 2191 arrived in Kirk Yard in mid-December, oddly still listed as B/O/  CN 2191 was photographed outside the NRE Silvis Shop in Illinois in early December.  Repaired repainted and ready to return to service,  she is now the best looking C40-8W in the fleet! Many including your CRO editor thought this GE was toast in 2014. In fact she was officially retired by CN.  It is amazing what work NRE has done to repair her and get her looking so great! WSOR covered much of the cost. Back in July 2014, a WSOR train pulled off the CN main at Slinger, Wisconsin at a switch. Then, the former WSOR engineer decided to make a back up move and shove blind  through two road Xings, an absolute signal, and through the switch back onto the CN main line. From what Iwe have learned, the train had a kicker. The conductor walked the train and the engineer shoved back so the conductor didn't have to walk all the way to the engines. The train shoved through a red signal at a control point on the CN. Meanwhile, a CN train just passed the clear signal a block behind the control point, so the CN train had no idea the WSOR ran the red. The CN came up doing 38 MPH and smashed the rear of the WSOR train. Both the engineer and conductor on the WSOR were terminated. A few moments later a SB CN train with CN 2191 leading, collided with the rail cars on the tail end of the WSOR train sitting on the main.  She was officially retired in 2014, yet has now returned back from the dead!  (My thanks to Dave Kinkade and Erik Rasmussen for the update).  Check her before photos taken at the after her collision at the WSOR / CN siding at Slinger, WI on June 7th, 2014.   (photos from Todd Tiffenbach, and Bill McCallister with thanks).

In November, IC SD40-3 6201 lost her IC black and white (OLS) Operation Life Saver paint scheme in favour of shiny new CN livery courtesy the Transcona Shop.  Paul Springowski shot her in the CN scheme overhauled and converted for belt pack operations.

For two weeks in Mid December, the L516 local has a duo of Illinois Central SD70 Deathstars: IC 1021 and IC 1035 were taken on December 16th, by Brennan Petit at MP 407.9 at Hester, LA.

Former LMSX C40-8W STATUS:

The latest repainted C40-8W bluebird released is IC 2461, seen here on December 2nd, on her first assignment in fresh CN paint taken by Henry Nye at Nenah Wisconsin trailing CN 8003 on northbound train A491.

IC C40-8W 2458, 2461, and 2465 are the only ones painted in CN uniform that we can confirm so far. IC 2461 was painted at the Centralia Shop in CN paint; IC 2465 was done at the Transcona Shop in Winnipeg; and IC 2458 was painted at the CN shop in Centralia, IL.  One candidate for CN paint is IC 2457 at Quality Rail for split cooling modifications and other upgrades, and may get repainted into CN colours.

The other LMSX C40-8W's are wearing (Conrail) blue paint, and are patched IC. After operating on CN and Conrail for many years in a co-leasing arrangement in the 1990's, LMSX 728-736, 738, and 739) eventually had their leases purchased by CN. One is off the roster, IC 2464 was retired in 2012, after being wrecked on the CSX.

CN LNG Test Program:

CN has chosen the SD70M-2 locomotive model to test their LNG Fuel Tenders.  We know of three for sure that have the LNG Modifications in the cabs; CN 8900, 8803 and 8811.  My buddy was able to photograph inside the cab of CN SD70M-2 8811. These locomotives are now equipped with a gas detector inside the cab, to alert crews if there is a leak, as well as several other modifications. . For the moment these locos continue to be in regular service with the new modifications.

New message display on the desktop computer screen of CN SD70M-2 8811:

LNG fuel tender CN 703 was coupled up to CN SD70M-2 8803 behind the Woodcrest Shop, where Mike Garza shot the pair being worked on, and tested on December 17th.

Currently two fuel tenders are at Woodcrest Shop (CN 700 and 702), and two others are in Edmonton, Alberta (CN 701 and 703).  Canadian National purchased four of the modified well car LNG tenders from Westport, and further modified and painted them at their CN Homewood, Illinois diesel Shop.  These two tenders will be tested in the Alberta area, but no date has been set.  Ironically Westport announced last year they were dropping of the LNG tender business.  "The AAR creates and maintains performance standards for many facets of the railroad industry and is the logical organization to take on the challenge of creating industry standards that offer homogeneity for fuel tender designs in support of industry and regulatory requirements," says Iden. "Also, the TAG is not ruling out the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) and hence the possibility of CNG fuel tenders. However, the majority of the TAG's effort at this time is on LNG fuel tenders as LNG is the logical form of natural gas fuel to support long-distance line-haul locomotives. There are four existing tank-car-style prototype tenders from the 1980s and 1990s and several new yet-to-be-operated well-car style tenders."

The NGFT TAG, which serves as an AAR/industry interface, is working on:

• Safety, crashworthiness, and environmental protection.

• Tender design and construction.

• Tender-to-locomotive interfaces and connections.

• Tender-to-refueling infrastructure interfaces and connections.

• Tender interoperability and interchangeability between railroads.

• Maintainability.

• Development of dual-fuel and gas-fuel locomotives and tenders.

• Soliciting feedback from relevant suppliers.

• Communicating and updating the NGFT TAG standards process to suppliers.

CN VIGNETTES

Sponsored by Old Time Trains.

This beautiful CNR steam locomotive was built for high speed passenger service between Montreal and Toronto which was eventually extended into Windsor.  However, as the trains grew in size at that time, the engines could not handle them effectively. They were downgraded to shorter local trains, such as runs like Toronto to Sarnia etc. They were able to handle up to 9 cars but that was about it.  Built in 1930 by MLW, with the CNR road number 5703, she was retired in 1960 and set to the scrap line.

It was pulled from the scrap line after when the original CNR 5700 (which was originally earmarked for preservation), was cut up by accident. CNR 5703 was renumbered to 5700, to match the first in the series (Class locomotive), of preserved engines (CNR 6200 and CNR 6400). It was displayed at the Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa in the late 60's. In 1988 it was declared surplus by the museum was moved to the preservation group in St. Thomas, Ontario who accepted it and would eventually become the Elgin County Railway Museum where it remains to this day on static display. This photo may have been taken in August 1988 which was when the St. Thomas Railway Museum had its first outdoor show.  (Our thanks to Rob Sterne, Ron Bearham, and Don Spiegelman.

CN C424 3228 and CN M636 2308 were some of many CN units leased  to Conrail in the late 1970's, shown sitting near the old coal tower in Croxton Yard, NJ in 1977.  An interesting back story here: All the CN units that went on lease to Conrail had creature comforts like small fridges and stoves, as mandated by CN's cab committee for any units equipped as leaders. Many of them were returned to Canada without these amenities.  CN vowed NEVER to lease units to Conrail again after this, (and never did).  (Photo by John Mech).

Paul Juenter shot great looking CN M636 2317 at Fort Erie, ON back in the early 1980's.

To the CN fan, nothing say's ―Oh Canada as well as the MLW/GMDD four-piece windshield and Safety Cab. On May 28th, 1983, With its white flags and off-centre headlight shining brightly up front, the seven handsome units have things well under control as this eastbound manifest blasts by on May 26th, 1983. The consist is a mix of M420W's and GP40-2L(W)'s: CN 2504 - CN 2516 - CN 9542 - CN 2509 - CN 9532 - CN 9422 - CN 9590, with 119 cars and van 79787 on the tail end. (Aleks Stefanovic).

One can only imagine how incredible this moment was on November 7th, 1982 when Aleks Stefanovic photographed CN #415 rolling at track speed, with three Big M's! The westbound train is seen blasting through Princeton, ON (Mile 37.6 on the Dundas Sub) with CN M636 2323, and C630M 2012 and 2005expiditing 81 cars, with CN van 79524 bringing up the rear.

On April 20th, 1985, Bill Grandin photographed GTW SD38 6252 at Flat Rock, MI. This old patched EMD was first built as DT&I 252 back in 1969. Note the nose bell!
